Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for The Witcher season 3, part 1.
The list of characters who have died in The Witcher season 3 includes both familiar faces from previous seasons and newcomers who were quickly disposed of. Covering events from Andrzej Sapkowski's Time of Contempt, The Witcher season 3, part 1 follows Geralt and Yennefer as they embark on a mission to safeguard and train Ciri. With the whole Continent and the relentless pursuit of the Wild Hunt in search of the Princess of Cintra, the stakes are incredibly high in this latest season of The Witcher.
The Witcher season 3, part 1 not only focused on the mission to protect Ciri, but it also introduced the possibility of a new war between Niflgaard and the North. Furthermore, the ending of The Witcher season 3, part 1 marked the start of the Thanned Coup, indicating that there will be intense and bloody battles in the upcoming return of The Witcher. Here is a comprehensive breakdown of all the deaths that have occurred in The Witcher season 3 thus far.
7 The Professor
In the opening sequence of The Witcher season 3, episode 1, there was a brief fighting scene featuring a character from Time of Contempt, where Henry Cavill's Geralt of Rivia played a central role. The character known as The Professor (Sunny Patel), who was referred to as Ralf Blunden on the show, was an assassin employed to eliminate Ciri during the events of Time of Contempt. Geralt effortlessly dispatched The Professor and his men, setting the tone for the third season of The Witcher. After the events of The Witcher season 2, virtually every faction in the Continent and beyond became interested in pursuing Ciri, ranging from mercenaries like The Professor to the formidable Wild Hunt.

Although primarily based on events from Time of Contempt, The Witcher season 3, part 1 also incorporated a pivotal moment from Blood of Elves. In episode 1, titled "Shaerrawedd," a monumental battle erupted, involving Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri against Francesca's elven faction. The objective of Francesca and her followers was to capture Ciri, as she possessed the Elder Blood and held the potential to save their people, as stipulated by an ancient prophecy. The skirmish featured Francesca, accompanied by her brother Gage, her spouse Filavandrel, Gallatin, and Dara, along with Yarpen's group of dwarves. Unfortunately, Rience's unforeseen arrival on the battlefield exacerbated an already dire situation.
Subsequently, a fierce conflict unfolded, resulting in casualties for both the elves and the dwarves. Gage, Francesca's brother, met his demise in The Witcher season 3, episode 1. Geralt, in a desperate attempt to safeguard Ciri, was forced to slay Gage after the elf attempted to capture her. Gage's demise serves as a poignant reminder of Geralt's unwavering determination to protect Ciri, but it further deepens the tragedy befalling the elven community. Notably, Francesca had already suffered the loss of her newborn child, who was ordered to be killed by Emhyr var Emreis in The Witcher season 2, adding to the burden of grief. Now, with the death of her brother Gage at the hands of Geralt of Rivia, the sorrow and strife faced by the elves continues to mount.
5 Fenn
Fenn, portrayed by Liz Carr, made her debut in season 2 of The Witcher, marking the introduction of the Codringher and Fenn detective agency in live-action. In season 2, Fenn and Codringher assist Istredd in his investigation regarding Nilfgaard's interest in Ciri. These characters return in season 3, where Geralt and Jaskier seek their help in uncovering more about Rience, who once again targets Ciri in the premiere of part 1. Geralt suspects that Rience is working under a more powerful mage, a suspicion that Fenn and Codringher validate.
However, Fenn and Codringher's involvement in Geralt's probe into Rience comes at a great cost. Despite their best efforts to deceive Geralt, Rience discovers their collaboration with the witcher, resulting in him setting their house ablaze while they are inside. In a cruel twist, Rience honors Fenn's plea to spare the cat by rescuing it from the burning home. Although the actual deaths of Fenn and Codringher are not depicted in The Witcher season 3, it is reasonable to assume that Fenn perishes in the fire.
4 Codringher
3 Queen Hedwig
: Similarly, in episode 2 of The Witcher season 3, Codringher (played by Simon Callow) meets his demise. Codringher attempts to persuade Rience against attacking them by revealing that they hadn't disclosed the true mastermind to Geralt. Despite Codringher's honesty and Geralt's continued unawareness of the real antagonist, Rience considers them a liability who could potentially expose Vilgefortz's hidden agenda. Codringher even hints at having knowledge of Vilgefortz's plan. As a result, Rience sets fire to Fenn and Codringher's office, ultimately claiming the lives of both of them.
In The Witcher season 3, part 1, Queen Hedwig (portrayed by Tracy-Ann Oberman) met a tragic demise that unfolded offscreen. The shocking turn of events involved Vizimir II, the ruler of Redania, who received an ominous "gift" from his brother. To Vizimir's horror, the contents hidden inside the box turned out to be none other than Queen Hedwig's severed head. This brutal act initially pointed fingers at Nilfgaard as the orchestrators, causing Vizimir II to swiftly reconsider his alliance with Emperor Emhyr. However, the true mastermind behind this heinous assassination was eventually unveiled to be none other than Dijkstra. His conniving plan sought to manipulate Vizimir's stance on the ongoing war between Nilfgaard and the North by sacrificing the life of the king's beloved wife.
Earlier in The Witcher season 3, King Vizimir II had announced his intentions to form an alliance between Redania and Nilfgaard. However, Dijkstra, the chief of Redania Intelligence, recognized the dire consequences such an alliance would have for not only Redania but also the Northern Kingdoms as a whole. Realizing that an alliance between Redania and Nilfgaard would ultimately result in Emperor Emhyr's triumph and the downfall of the Northern Kingdoms, including Redania itself, Dijkstra embarked on a series of ruthless schemes in The Witcher season 3. It was during this time that Prince Radovid uncovered Dijkstra's role in the death of Queen Hedwig. Despite this knowledge, Prince Radovid chose to withhold this information from the king, ensuring the continuation of Dijkstra's power and influence over the kingdom.
2 Gallatin
In The Witcher season 3, episode 3, Gallatin (Robbie Amell) meets his demise at the hands of Cahir. The purpose behind Cahir's act was to demonstrate his loyalty to Emhyr and regain the Emperor of Nilfgaard's trust. During the season 2 finale, Cahir attempted to deceive Emhyr by falsely claiming responsibility for the death of Francesca's baby alongside Fringilla. As a result, Emhyr treated Cahir as a prisoner in the third season, prompting him to prove his allegiance. Despite the existing bond between Cahir and Gallatin, the former mercilessly killed the latter upon the elf's arrival at Emhyr's palace.
Gallatin’s demise in the third season of The Witcher was not merely a test for Cahir's abilities, but also a calculated political move orchestrated by Emhyr. It provided an opportunity for Emhyr to assert that Gallatin had attempted to betray the elves. Cahir was instructed to deceive the elves by approaching Francesca and delivering the news of Gallatin's death, ultimately coaxing them into collaborating with the White Flame. Notably, Gallatin was an original character created specifically for the show, and his storyline differed from that of The Witcher season 3 book.
1 Aplegatt
Aplegatt (Jim Sturgeon), the messenger briefly employed by Dijkstra in The Witcher season 3, met his untimely demise before he could deliver the message entrusted to him. Ciri encountered a vision of Aplegatt's death in The Witcher season 3, part 2. Unfamiliar with his identity or the circumstances surrounding his imminent demise, Ciri grappled with the helplessness of foreseeing his fate. This internal struggle further burdened the Princess of Cintra, who had to confront the constraints of her powers. Yennefer cautioned that attempting to avert a premonition's fulfillment could unleash catastrophic repercussions.
If Ciri somehow prevented Aplegatt's death, it could potentially result in numerous other fatalities. However, despite any efforts to avoid it, Aplegatt ultimately met his demise when he was fatally struck by an arrow while en route to deliver Dijkstra's urgent message to Aedir's Navy Commander. The significance of the message Aplegatt carried cannot be understated, as it alerted Niflgaard to the impending attack from the Northern forces. With Aplegatt unable to fulfill his mission, Emperor Emhyr will have exactly what he desires - a justification to reignite the war for the Continent once the North launches their assault. This pivotal development is likely to be explored in the second part of Season 3 of The Witcher.
