There have been previous instances of harassment directed towards Pokemon GO streamers. A streamer who focuses on Pokemon GO and shares live content on Twitch, known as j0beats, was targeted by harassment. j0beats is an English content creator who entertains her viewers by streaming her adventures and Pokemon hunts in nearby locations. The game recently introduced a new Routes feature, which allows players to track and record their walking paths.
Pokemon GO, an AR mobile game released in 2016, allows players to become Pokemon Trainers and catch Pokemon wherever they go. Despite Niantic facing criticism for the Remote Raid update, the game remains incredibly successful worldwide. Many content creators choose Pokemon GO as their game of choice for taking viewers on thrilling Pokemon-hunting adventures, sometimes leading to interesting encounters with people, both positive and unsettling.
However, j0beats had an unfortunate experience while streaming Pokemon GO on Twitch. A man attempted to kiss her while she was live, as witnessed in a clip she shared on Twitter. In the clip, she can be seen conversing with two men, and one of them leaned in while her eyes were closed. The men quickly left after the incident, and the streamer was unharmed. Nevertheless, she expressed her displeasure with what had happened. She later reported the incident to the police and expressed gratitude to those who showed concern and support after witnessing the harassment during her stream. She also mentioned having a panic alarm with her but was unable to use it at the time due to feeling more embarrassed than anything else.
Many followers and fellow Pokemon GO streamers expressed their support and love for j0beats in response. They denounced the unacceptable behavior that occurred both on and off camera, acknowledging that some people wrongly assume that it is permissible to harass someone simply because they are being recorded. Sadly, this incident is not an isolated occurrence, as evidenced by the fact that Summit1g, another Pokemon GO streamer, was swatted while playing in a public park.
Twitch streamers sometimes face harassment from viewers who engage in swatting or send disturbing gifts. Consequently, streamers, particularly those who produce IRL (In Real Life) content, must exercise utmost caution by refraining from divulging personal information. To ensure their own safety, it would also be beneficial for streamers to have self-defense tools like j0beats' panic alarm at their disposal in case of emergencies.
