Captain Sandy expressed her surprise and lack of knowledge regarding Captain Lee's unexpected departure from Below Deck. She mentioned that she was unaware that it was not his choice to leave. Captain Sandy pointed out that Captain Lee is not in good health and stated that if she were in his position, she would prioritize resting and enjoying her time on a beach instead of worrying about filming a TV show. This statement was made during an exclusive interview on Monday, June 26, where Captain Sandy was promoting her partnership with Chips Ahoy!, as the star of Below Deck Mediterranean.
Sandy, a Bravo franchise member since 2017, mentioned that she hasn't had any communication with 73-year-old Lee ever since the news of his departure came out. "I'm not aware of how it occurred because I haven't had a conversation with him," she stated.
Content: The news of Captain Lee being replaced by Captain Kerry for season 11 of Below Deck Adventure in Grenada was first reported by Us in February. Captain Lee, the original star of Below Deck, later admitted he was equally caught off guard by the unexpected change.
He told Us exclusively in May that he was completely caught off guard by the sudden change. "It was completely unexpected," he said. "If they ever wanted me to return to the show, I would be open to it. After all, I have dedicated 10 years of my life to it. However, if I were to leave, I would prefer it to be under different circumstances."
Lee mentioned that Bravo did not provide him with a specific reason for their decision. "They simply said, 'We want to go in a new direction,'" he recalled. "But that's a common phrase used when someone is being let go. It's just an overused cliche."
Sandy temporarily stepped in for Lee on season 10 of Below Deck due to his health problems. During this time, Sandy's leadership was questioned, which surprised viewers. Sandy believed that their differing viewpoints were exaggerated later. Lee accused Sandy of not informing him about the firing of stew Camille Lamb, but Sandy argued that she was the one in charge while Lee was dealing with his health issues.
"I find it hard to believe that there was any controversy surrounding it. The fact is, when you are in charge of a boat and someone falls ill, you don't need to ask for permission to take action. You have the authority as the captain," she explained to Us on Monday. "After the incident, I did inform him about what had happened. It's always important to maintain respect. But I agree with him. I think some people blew it out of proportion."
After the tenth season concluded, Sandy made several attempts to communicate with Lee. "I tried to reach out to him a few times. He just needed to call me back," she revealed. "If I were to see him, it wouldn't be a conversation because he already understands. If he were in my position, he would have done the same thing."
Sandy expressed her belief in the importance of supporting one another as captains. She shared a personal anecdote about how a friend filled in for her when she had to attend her mother's funeral, demonstrating the camaraderie among captains. Currently, the TV personality is concentrating on filming season 8 of Below Deck Med and collaborating with Chips Ahoy! for their 60th anniversary. To celebrate this milestone, Chips Ahoy! has launched the Chips Ahoy! Happiest Birthday Party, giving two fortunate fans the opportunity to win a unique birthday celebration on a private yacht.
