Shawn Johnson and her husband Andrew East made their first public appearance on the red carpet at the ESPYs following the announcement of their third pregnancy. The couple, both 31 years old, arrived at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Wednesday, July 12. Johnson stunned in a vibrant teal strapless gown that beautifully showcased her growing baby bump, while East looked dashing in a classic black suit as he posed beside his wife.
Johnson made a surprising announcement on Instagram just before the awards show, revealing that she and East were expecting another child. She posted pictures from their family vacation to Greece and encouraged her followers to swipe for the surprise. Johnson and East already have two children, a 3-year-old daughter named Drew and a 2-year-old son named Jett. In addition to the social media announcement, the couple also discussed Johnson's pregnancy in more detail on their "Couple Things" podcast episode released on Wednesday.
“We’ve definitely held out on sharing this news with you all, and, to be honest, it’s a mix of emotions,” remarked Johnson. “I’ve genuinely cherished the idea of keeping it just between us. … Having this special secret between us has brought so much joy.”
Andrew East and Shawn Johnson East jokingly revealed that they were struggling to find new ways to hide Johnson's pregnancy as she reached the halfway mark. Johnson mentioned that their third baby would probably be their last unless they considered adoption.
"I did mention that this would be our final attempt," she informed East. "Having your babies really takes a significant toll on my body due to their large size. However, if we decide to have more children in the future, I am open to adoption or exploring other alternatives."
In response, East affirmed his willingness to support his wife's decision and expressed his openness to the idea of having more children.
"I'm uncertain about what having three children will be like. It seems to go one of two ways. Some people say, 'Oh, it's no big deal, you already have two.' While others admit, 'Three kids broke me,'" he jokingly remarked. "So, we'll keep you updated on how it goes for us. Personally, I'm fully open to having more kids, but I understand that it's ultimately your decision as the one who gets pregnant."
Johnson and East have faced both triumphs and challenges as they embarked on their journey to expand their family. Before becoming parents for the first time in 2019, Johnson experienced a miscarriage. Even during her pregnancy with Jett in 2021, the athlete was already contemplating the idea of having a third child.
“We’re over halfway through [this pregnancy], and I could see myself doing it again,” Johnson exclusively told We in March 2021.
