In part 2 of The Golden Boy, Oscar De La Hoya fearlessly addresses his numerous controversies, with a focal point on his tumultuous relationships, including his involvement with his ex-partner Shanna Moakler. Streaming on Max, this HBO documentary delves into De La Hoya's recollection of their initial encounter during the 1990s.
"I feel like a child in a candy store, surrounded by celebrities. There are women everywhere - incredibly beautiful women. But then, I caught sight of her. She was a stunning, tall, blonde-haired woman who appeared almost ethereal, like a silhouette. It was as if she were a ghost," he recounted. "She was the first American woman I ever dated. She was an actress, and even held the title of Miss USA. As a young Mexican man from East L.A., I was floored, thinking, 'Wow, this could really boost my career.'"
Moakler, on her part, expressed a deep sense of connection upon crossing paths with the athlete, describing their meeting as if she had found her soulmate.
"He was an absolute delight, always making me feel incredibly beautiful," she expressed. "My heart was captivated by him."
Without wasting any time, De La Hoya and Moakler began their relationship. "Being part of a power couple was something I had always dreamt of since I was a young girl," she elaborated. "I adored the attention and cherished our lifestyle. ... Attending his fights, having a chauffeur pick me up from my apartment to take me to Big Bear, and then flying on our own private jet. And let's not forget about the security guards, bodyguards, and the secret tunnels guiding us through the Bellagio to our luxurious penthouses."
Six months into their whirlwind romance, Moakler discovered her pregnancy in 1998. "We were engaged and had just settled into our dream home. Everything felt like a fairy tale," Moakler recalled. In March 1999, she gave birth to their daughter, Atiana. However, their bliss was short-lived as challenges soon emerged. One of their initial obstacles arose when De La Hoya's former girlfriend alleged that he was the father of her son, Jacob, who was born in February 1998.
"I recall him stating, 'I do not have a son,' followed by his surprising gesture of buying me a tennis bracelet," Moakler shared. "I remember expressing that it was fine if he did have a son, I just needed to be aware. The paternity test was carried out, and it confirmed that Jacob was indeed his son. I responded with, 'Alright, well, we will embrace him and congratulate you on having a son.'"
Coinciding with Jacob's birth, De La Hoya unknowingly became a father to another son. Angelique McQueen came forward in November 1998 and disclosed that they had conceived a child named Devon after a one-night encounter.
De La Hoya reminisced, "I currently have three children. It carries significant obligations which I initially found overwhelming. I lacked the knowledge and skills required to fulfill the role of a parent, which led me to resort to alcohol as a coping mechanism."
During his battle with substance abuse, Moakler asserted that De La Hoya underwent a noticeable transformation whenever he consumed alcohol.
"Reflecting on it now, I simply refused to accept the truth," she explained. "Despite witnessing it firsthand and experiencing it myself, I was reluctant to acknowledge the reality. Perhaps I was infatuated with the image I had created of him in my mind. Women would contact me and claim, 'I had a romantic encounter with your fiance.' And I would immediately dismiss their claims, saying, 'No, that's impossible. He would never betray me like that. You're only interested in his wealth.'"
Despite the increasing frequency of De La Hoya's betrayals, Moakler hesitated to end the relationship.
"I used to pursue him relentlessly in nightclubs, but whenever security guards noticed me, they would swiftly whisk him away through the back exit, preventing me from reaching him. He would always reassure me, saying, 'No, I love you.' However, rumors surfaced that he had been accused of rape by women in Mexico. Despite these incidents, I remained loyal to him, refusing to believe any of it."
After the woman turned 18, De La Hoya refuted the rape allegations made against him and eventually settled the subsequent civil lawsuit outside of court in 2001.
"In the documentary, Moakler expressed disbelief regarding his guilt in any of the allegations. He believed that these women were simply attempting to exploit the situation for financial gain," stated Moakler. He further recounted yet another accusation aimed at De La Hoya.
"We celebrated Christmas in Palm Springs while his friends held a party at our home in Bel Air. Feeling hurt, I couldn't believe he would leave on such an occasion. To make matters worse, another woman accused him of rape at our house," she recounted.
Despite the December 1999 allegation, De La Hoya faced no criminal charges and firmly denied the accusation. Speaking to HBO cameras, he admitted, "I may have placed myself in vulnerable situations where people could make false claims against me. I was reckless, but I am not a bad person. It is not in my nature, my DNA, to ever commit such an act."
After two big losses in the ring, De La Hoya fired his team and hired a business manager named Richard Schaefer.
“I just knew. I was like, ‘This is so bad,’” Moakler said.
De La Hoya's future ambitions included pursuing a Latin pop singing career. Moakler alleged that during his album recording in Florida, Richard expressed to Oscar that she did not embody enough Latina qualities and that he needed to be seen with a Mexican or Latina woman in order to garner respect from the Mexican community.
After being presented with a photograph of the enchanting singer Millie Corretjer by his producer, De La Hoya was captivated by her ethereal beauty. Recognizing the potential for a musical collaboration, the recording company placed significant importance on facilitating their introduction, ultimately resulting in her inclusion in a compelling music video.
Moakler recounted the day she went to the set, accompanying Richard Schaefer in a golf cart. She expressed her concerns about her troubled relationship with Oscar De La Hoya. Schaefer empathetically replied, "Shanna, I can't control the heart." Moakler's reaction was one of anger and disbelief as she felt implicated in his response.
Moakler alleged that De La Hoya assured her they would "begin anew" upon his return from New York City. However, she noticed that he was holding hands with Corretjer on the red carpet at the Latin Grammy Awards, as she had not received any communication from him. The documentary portrayed their conflicting views on whether they were still in a relationship during the 2000 awards show.
The following day, he joined me inside the car. I simply asked, "Why did you do that?" He stared right into my eyes and replied, "I no longer love you." He then boldly stated, "Shanna, I possess more wealth than one can imagine." With that, he exited the vehicle and approached the window where I sat, sobbing. He tapped on the glass and uttered, "Please don't be too hard on me!" Every word he spoke to me was devoid of truth.
De La Hoya proceeded to marry Corretjer in 2001, and together they had three children before ultimately separating in 2016. Throughout their marriage, De La Hoya, who failed to disclose the existence of his son Devon to his new wife until she discovered him in a magazine, was accused of infidelity with Russian dancer Milana Dravnel.
Dravnel remembered her encounter with the "very charming" De La Hoya at a nightclub in NYC, where they engaged in a casual and non-committal romance. Although Dravnel was present when De La Hoya gained notoriety for being photographed in fishnets and high heels, she denied being the one responsible for capturing those images. Despite paying a hefty sum of $1 million in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent the leak, De La Hoya vehemently denied the authenticity of the photos at that time.
In the documentary, De La Hoya revealed the extent to which he and his team went to convince the public that the pictures were fake. They hired "experts" to provide commentary on the images and even persuaded Dravnel to lie on his behalf.
