Scarlett Johansson's journey with Marvel Studios may have ended with her final appearance as Natasha Romanoff in the standalone film Black Widow, but her involvement with the studio is far from over. In fact, Johansson has confirmed that she is still working on a "top secret" project with Marvel Studios. After bidding farewell to her iconic character, fans were left wondering what could be in store for the talented actress. Marvel boss Kevin Feige teased a producing capacity for Johansson on a "non-Black Widow-related top-secret Marvel Studios project," leaving audiences eager to learn more. Despite the cryptic nature of Feige's comment, Johansson remains an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Feige recently announced Phase 5 and 6 MCU projects, but none of them seem to include Johansson's secret project. However, Johansson confirmed in an interview with ComicBook.com that the project is still happening but is currently on hold due to the ongoing writers' strike and potentially their own guild strike. "It is still happening, [but] not currently because nothing is happening right now. We're all sort of in this holding pattern as we wait out the writers' strike and potentially our own guild strike, and so on and so forth," she explained. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike has caused significant delays to several major film and television series projects.
Since May 2, 2023, the Writers Guild of America members have been on strike following unsuccessful negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Over 11,500 writers responsible for creating the content that fans love have ceased working, citing grievances such as inadequate streaming compensation and benefits packages. The impact of the strike has been felt across the industry, with major projects such as Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures' Spider-Man 4 being affected. Any film or series that was still in the writing or pre-production phase when the strike began has been disrupted, with productions like Daredevil: Born Again having to pause filming due to picketing outside the studios. Even projects that were in the writing phase, like Johansson's secret Marvel project, will be indefinitely postponed. As negotiations continue, many films and series will remain at a standstill until the strike is resolved.
Black Widow is now streaming on Disney Plus.
