Hailed as the drag queen favored by your favorite drag queen, Sasha Colby's victory on season 15 of RuPaul's Drag Race was a sure thing from the beginning. However, she never takes her success for granted.
Entering the competition as an undeniable frontrunner meant that Colby, at the age of 39, had to put in even more effort to ensure she was flawless. "That was the first thought that crossed my mind," she exclusively tells We. "They could have dismissed it as 'pretty privilege'... So I worked exceptionally hard to present a flawless package that was undeniable in its excellence. I wanted to earn the win and make it abundantly clear. That's what I was committed to doing."
Colby's success in fulfilling her mission has led to rumors that she might be selected as the host of Drag Race once RuPaul retires. Although Colby acknowledges these rumors, she believes that RuPaul has no immediate plans to step down. Nevertheless, she does not dismiss the possibility of taking on the role if RuPaul ever decides to retire and requests Colby's assistance.
While hosting Drag Race may not be a feasible opportunity, Colby remains open to appearing on reality TV again, particularly if she receives an invitation from the producers of Dancing With the Stars. She expresses enthusiasm for this prospect, mentioning that she has never received formal training in ballroom dancing, making it an exciting and fresh challenge for her.
Chelsea Guglielmino/Getty ImagesIn the meantime, she has numerous other endeavors to occupy her time. Recently, she unveiled her very first single, "Feel the Power," featuring Luciana, which is set to release on Friday, October 20. Additionally, she will embark on her inaugural solo tour, Sasha Colby: Stripped, scheduled to commence in February 2024 (tickets will be available for purchase starting Friday at TheSashaColby.com). Furthermore, her line of ponytail extensions, Sasha Colby Hair, is now accessible, with plans for brand expansion on the horizon. When asked if she is currently experiencing her mogul era, Colby confidently asserts, "Absolutely. I have witnessed numerous former contestants—some not even winners—skyrocket into celebrity stardom and entrepreneurial success. Let's make it happen."
Colby is eager to utilize her platform to advocate for the LGBTQ+ community in a time when states across the nation are swiftly enacting discriminatory legislation against transgender individuals and drag performers.
"When participating in this competition, it's crucial to contemplate the underlying purpose behind it," she explains. "Initially, my goal was to emerge victorious for personal reasons. However, I realized that it transcended my own desires and became an opportunity to address the pressing issues prevalent in the world. It became a little easier to complete the task when I reminded myself that this endeavor was not solely for my benefit. It was for the countless children who are currently living in fear, and for those individuals who are uncertain about their next steps. I wanted to exhibit strength on their behalf and leverage the platform and privileges I possess to challenge others to introspect and examine themselves, even if it might cause discomfort."
