After watching The Flash, Sasha Calle shared a heartwarming moment with Henry Cavill, who gave his approval for her to carry on his legacy as Supergirl in the upcoming film. Cavill, who first introduced the character of Superman in Man of Steel a decade ago, had his time in the iconic role cut short after Zack Snyder's Justice League. However, Calle sees him as "our Superman" and the perfect predecessor for her upcoming portrayal. With his blessing, she is poised to take on the mantle in what may be the final film of the DCEU franchise, depending on the success of Aquaman 2.
During an interview with Fandango, Calle shared that she had met Cavill after the filming had wrapped up and he had already watched the movie. She expressed her admiration for him, calling him an icon and "obviously, our Superman." Calle even asked Cavill for his approval, to which he replied that it was "Superman approved." She revealed that she had watched Man of Steel multiple times and that Cavill's approval meant a lot to her, describing him as a "kind human" who congratulated her on a job well done. However, as Cavill's Superman is no longer part of the DCEU, their meeting marks the end of an era for this generation's Man of Steel, making it a bittersweet interaction.
Despite the excitement surrounding Sasha Calle's debut as Supergirl in The Flash, there are mixed emotions among fans. While some are embracing her as the new face of the character, others are angry at Warner Bros. Discovery for using Henry Cavill's name in the film's promotion. This comes after Cavill was removed from the role of Superman and replaced by a rebooted version from James Gunn and Peter Safran. It could be argued that this move is tone-deaf given the public discourse that has surrounded Cavill's departure from the role.
Furthermore, reports suggest that Calle's debut as Supergirl is bittersweet as there were plans for a Supergirl spinoff film and a rumored HBO Max series featuring Michael Keaton's Batman. It remains to be seen if these projects will come to fruition under Gunn's leadership, as he focuses on his contributions to the DCEU with Peacemaker and Waller. However, the success of The Flash could open doors for Calle to continue as Supergirl and even lead to the possibility of a Batman Beyond film with Keaton and the return of Cavill as Superman in an alternate timeline with Zack Snyder's Flashpoint.
The Flash is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 16, 2023.
