Sabrina Carpenter recently shared about experiencing her toughest breakup in 2021, which coincided with her apparent split from ex Joshua Bassett.
During an interview on Apple 1's New Music Daily with Zane Lowe, the 24-year-old singer revealed, "I was heartbroken two years ago. I was in a really, really different mental place. For me, that was truly my first heartbreak. And so I think when you’re going through something like that, you question everything about yourself and you take it really personal."
The singer mentioned that after the breakup, she started questioning her own instincts and the importance of other people's opinions over her own.
Carpenter also shared that the lyrics of her new song "Espresso" reflect the experiences she had during her last breakup and also show where she is currently in her life.
She shared that even a simple funny line like "my give a f–ks are on vacation" resonates with her, as the song captures where she is currently in life. She mentioned that there has been a significant change from two years ago to now, and she is now focused on having fun, which she considers the biggest difference.
Rumors of her dating Bassett, 23, first surfaced in June 2020 when they were seen together at a Black Lives Matter protest in Los Angeles. Many fans were surprised by their romance at the time, as they had believed the actor was dating Olivia Rodrigo.
Rodrigo, who is 21 years old, and Carpenter never confirmed if they were dating Bassett, but their music hinted at the possibility. Rodrigo's first single, "Driver's License," released in January 2021, mentioned a "blonde" person who was "much older" than her.

In the same month, Carpenter released a song called "Skin," in which she sings the lyrics "Maybe we could've been friends / If I met you in another life." She also included a line that seemed to reference Rodrigo's song title, saying "Don't drive yourself insane."
When Carpenter appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden in February 2021, she denied that "Skin" was a diss track.
"People always tend to create a story out of things, you know?" she mentioned. "I feel like this song was really intriguing because people often misinterpret it and turn it into something it was never meant to be in the first place."
Later that year, Carpenter released her song "Skinny Dipping," which focused on finding closure after a breakup. Following this, she hinted at being single in a TikTok video, where she mentioned, "I'm in search of love. I recently became single...I believe...and I'm hoping to find someone to spend the rest of my life with."
Carpenter has since moved on with actor Barry Keoghan, who she has been linked to since December of 2023.
