In January 2021, Rodrigo stirred up controversy with the release of her debut single, "Driver's License," which contained references to an older "blonde" individual. Contrary to speculation, Carpenter denied putting out her own diss track in response with her song "Skin." In 2022, Carpenter's track "Because I Liked a Boy" reignited rumors of a love triangle involving herself, Rodrigo, and Bassett.

The "Nonsense" singer and the former Good Luck Charlie star were initially connected in 2014. During that same year, Carpenter spoke to J-14 about how Perry approached her for a date.

"[It was] a really one-of-a-kind approach to asking someone out. It was reminiscent of pirate movies, where they use small bottles to send notes across the ocean, like one of those. He placed a note inside. It was adorable," she expressed enthusiastically at the time.
