Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe met on her 21st birthday in March 1997 and dated for two years. They got married right after Cruel Intentions was released. Their daughter Ava was born in September 1999, followed by their son Deacon in October 2003. They were married for almost seven years before Witherspoon filed for divorce in 2006, citing irreconcilable differences.
After their split, both actors started new families with other partners. Witherspoon married Jim Toth in 2011, and they had a son named Tennessee in September of the same year. Phillippe welcomed a daughter named Kai with his ex Alexis Knapp in July 2011.
The exes have continued to co-parent together after their divorce. They have celebrated their children's graduations and birthdays publicly, showing their support for Ava and Deacon. During their son's 18th birthday in 2021, Phillippe posted a photo on social media with Reese and Deacon in front of a birthday cake.
In the caption, the proud dad expressed his love for his son, calling him a shining light in the world. He also mentioned how fortunate they are to be Deacon's parents. Phillippe ended the caption by acknowledging his ex-wife Reese, stating, "I'd say we did pretty good @reesewitherspoon."
Later in the same year, we were informed by a source that Phillippe and Witherspoon's coparenting relationship was thriving, especially during the challenging times of the coronavirus pandemic.
According to the insider, Ryan has shown himself to be an exceptional parent, always putting his children first. Even when he was in a different country during the pandemic, he made sure to be present in their lives. His kids still see him as the 'cool parent' and he takes pride in the individuals they have grown to be.
Both kids are following in their parents' Hollywood footsteps. Ava has tried modeling while Deacon has ventured into music and acting, making his debut in 2022 on Netflix's Never Have I Ever. As they navigate their careers, they have built strong bonds with their parents. Phillippe has even referred to Deacon as his "best friend" on social media, and Witherspoon has expressed her love for the close relationships they share.
In an interview with Interview magazine in June 2021, Witherspoon shared her emotions about her adult children. She mentioned how it makes her emotional to think about having a long-lasting relationship with them. Witherspoon never anticipated the deep connection she now shares with her children, finding it incredibly rewarding to have kids she can navigate life with. She is grateful for the opportunity to learn from them and understand the complexities of being human in today's world. Witherspoon marvels at the fact that she now has two adult children, finding it all quite unbelievable.
