Ryan Guzman, star of 9-1-1, recently revealed details about a past suicide attempt. About six and a half to seven years ago, he experienced a mental health crisis and tried to take his own life. In a clip for the upcoming episode of the "I've Never Said This Before" podcast, Guzman, 36, shared that he had never spoken about this publicly before. Fortunately, the attempt was not successful, and he feels grateful for a second chance, attributing it to the grace of God.
Since that moment, Guzman has viewed every step as a chance to move past his past and grow from his experiences.
He mentioned that both his suicide attempt and the loss of his friend Stephen "tWitch" Boss, who took his own life in December 2022, had a profound impact on his life.
Those two significant moments, along with what my brother tWitch went through, have had a profound impact on my life. They have helped me develop a greater sense of compassion and understanding towards others.
Following his honest discussion about his mental health challenges, Guzman had a special message for all men.
Men, it's important to let go of the idea that you have to be tough and hold everything in. Instead, lean on your brothers for support. If your current friends are not there for you in the way you need, don't be afraid to find new friends who will be. Surround yourself with people who encourage a healthy lifestyle, and if you are holding on to toxic relationships out of loyalty, it's okay to let them go. There are plenty of others who have been through similar experiences and are willing to help you.

Guzman noted that he “would love to do more” for mental health awareness, especially for men, but also in general.
"I hope there is a new wave emerging, where we can all come together and truly understand what connection means," he expressed. "Let's work towards making this issue less common. I am ready to support this movement."
Guzman had previously opened up about his battle with depression when he responded to a social media user going through a tough time.
"I have been dealing with depression for years now," he shared on X in May 2020. "I have learned that the constant negativity can only be overcome by keeping the mind occupied with tasks that allow negativity to pass through, rather than dwelling on it. The battles can be won, but the war seems never-ending. God bless you."
On the screen, Guzman has been portraying firefighter Eddie Diaz since season 2 of 9-1-1. The character has faced his own mental health challenges, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and panic attacks stemming from his time in the military.
