Rob McElhenney enthusiastically shared festive fan art, captioning two photos of himself and Ryan Reynolds Photoshopped onto the cover of Wham!'s "Last Christmas." He also credited the fan who created the pictures.
In the first photo, the duo appeared on the cover of Wham!'s "Last Christmas" record, with the Wrexham Football Club logo in the top left corner. The second picture showed the same fan editing McElhenney and the 47-year-old Reynolds onto the group's "Fantastic" album cover, with "Wrexham!" replacing "Wham!" at the top.
McElhenney and Reynolds took on the roles of co-chairmen of the Welsh football team in 2020. Their experiences of owning a soccer team have been documented in the FX docuseries "Welcome to Wrexham," which concluded its second season earlier this year.
Season 2 documented Wrexham's journey through the 2022-2023 season, their second year with Reynolds and McElhenney as owners. The team experienced significant challenges and triumphs while handling various off-field issues, such as investing $25.5 million to renovate the team's stadium and striving to advance the team to a higher league. Reynolds even made a lighthearted comment about being willing to "sell" one of his and wife Blake Lively’s children for the team’s benefit.
"During the second season premiere in September, he mentioned that he has four [football clubs], but he admitted that he doesn't even know their names."
"As the season progressed, the men kept expressing their frustration over the financial losses incurred from owning the football club."
During an October episode, McElhenney brought up the amount of money being lost. Executive director of Wrexham, Humphrey Ker, admitted that it was a substantial amount but did not give a specific number. Reynolds asked for a quantification of the losses, and Wrexham Advisor to the Board Shaun Harvey ultimately estimated that the duo had lost over $12 million, which caused Reynolds to express a feeling of nausea.
McElhenney replied, “Let’s just say we’re in it for the rest of our lives. At what point do I get paid?”
Despite their monetary hardships, Wrexham found success by the end of their season.
Reynolds and McElhenney entered Wrexham AFC’s last National League game with anticipation and pressure, as highlighted in the season 2 finale of Welcome to Wrexham last month.
“It needs to end now,” stated McElhenney prior to the game, addressing the team's 15-year promotion drought. "This has been ongoing for far too long."
