Who qualifies for Euro 2024?

In September, the journey to Germany and Euro 2024 progressed. Let's take a look at the current status of the recent matches. Scotland has the opportunity to secure qualification by securing a draw against Spain on Thursday...

Who qualifies for Euro 2024?

Both the group winners and runners-up from the 10 groups will earn automatic qualification.

The play-offs will determine the qualification of three teams from a pool of 12 teams selected based on their performance in the recent Nations League. At present, Germany is the only country guaranteed a spot as one of the 24 nations participating in the upcoming tournament next summer.

The Euro 2024 qualifying groups

Group A:Spain, Scotland, Norway, Georgia, Cyprus.

Group B: Netherlands, France, Republic of Ireland, Greece, Gibraltar.

Group C: Italy, England, Ukraine, North Macedonia, Malta.

Group D: Croatia, Wales, Armenia, Turkey, Latvia.

Group E: Poland, Czech Republic, Albania, Faroe Islands, Moldova.

Group F: Belgium, Austria, Sweden, Azerbaijan, Estonia.

Group G: Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro, Bulgaria, Lithuania.

Group H: Denmark, Finland, Slovenia, Kazakhstan, Northern Ireland, San Marino.

Group I: Switzerland, Israel, Romania, Kosovo, Belarus, Andorra.

Group J: Portugal, Bosnia, Iceland, Luxembourg, Slovakia, Liechtenstein.

State of play

Scotland's Euro 2024 qualification hopes could become a reality on Thursday if they manage to secure at least a draw against Spain in Seville. Alternatively, if Norway fails to defeat Cyprus on the same night, Scotland will also secure their qualification.

Group A

Following the crucial Spain match, Scotland will have two remaining qualifiers. They will face Georgia on November 16 in an away fixture, followed by a home match against Norway just three days later.

Group B

Ireland's hopes of qualifying from Group B are almost extinguished, and their fate could be sealed this Friday.

A victory against Greece would keep them mathematically in contention for a spot in the finals, but if they draw and the Netherlands secure a win, Ireland will be eliminated.

The result:

Greece is on equal points with the Netherlands after a convincing 5-0 victory over Gibraltar in their previous match.

If the Netherlands manages to defeat France in their upcoming clash on October 13, France's group lead will be reduced to only three points, despite having played an additional game.

But if France emerges victorious, they will solidify their position in Germany.

Group C

England will guarantee their spot at Euro 2024 if Ukraine and North Macedonia settle for a draw on Saturday, and England triumphs over Italy at Wembley three days later.

If Ukraine loses, England only needs to secure a single point against Italy. However, England understands that a victory against Italy would pretty much secure their position since Italy, Ukraine, and North Macedonia will still have to face each other. This makes it highly unlikely for two of the trailing teams to catch up with England.

Group D

Regardless of the outcome for Wales, their chances of qualification will still be intact after this round of games, albeit by a slim margin.

If either Turkey or Croatia wins both of their matches, they will secure a place in the finals, as long as Wales and Armenia both fail to secure victories in their respective games.

Group E

A thrilling four-horse race. Following their 2-0 victory over Poland in the previous round, Albania currently leads Group E. Moldova's triumph over the Faroe Islands has kept them squarely in contention, while the second-placed Czech Republic still have a game in hand against their rivals.

Matchday seven will determine a crucial outcome - the Faroe Islands will officially be eliminated if they lose, the Czech Republic emerges victorious, or if both teams settle for a draw.

Group F

Belgium and Austria are on the verge of securing a spot in Euro 2024, with both teams just one victory away. Their upcoming match in Vienna on Friday will be decisive in determining who reaches the tournament.

In the meantime, Sweden's aspirations rest on a draw between Belgium and Austria, hoping it will improve their chances. Unfortunately for them, their hopes were dampened after suffering a defeat against Austria in their previous encounter.

Group G

Serbia and Hungary are currently tied on points, with Serbia gaining an advantage thanks to Aleksandar Mitrovic's impressive performance where he netted a hat-trick in a 3-1 victory over Lithuania. Meanwhile, Montenegro solidified their place in second position by defeating Bulgaria, leaving Hungary as the only team at the top who remain undefeated and have an additional game to play.

To stay in contention, both Bulgaria and Lithuania must emerge victorious in their upcoming Matchday seven clashes, otherwise, their chances of progressing further will be eliminated.

Group H

To keep their slim hopes alive, Northern Ireland must secure a victory against minnows San Marino. However, even that may not be enough, as wins for either Slovenia and Denmark, or Kazakhstan and Slovenia, would eliminate them.

Group I

In Group I, Switzerland holds a two-point lead over Romania and remains the only undefeated team, bringing greater clarity to the group standings.

Group J

On Thursday, Romania has the opportunity to surpass Switzerland in the rankings as they go up against Belarus. Meanwhile, Switzerland had a scheduled match against Israel on the same day, but due to the ongoing conflict, Israel's October matches have all been postponed.

Group J

Portugal, on the other hand, have a strong chance of securing a spot in Euro 2024, having achieved maximum points and not conceding a single goal so far. A victory over Slovakia would guarantee their place in the finals, or a draw if Luxembourg fails to win against Iceland.

What about the play-offs?

When a country emerges as the winner of their Nations League group, they are granted direct entry into the play-offs, unless they secure a place in the tournament itself by finishing among the top two teams in their qualifying group.

In such a scenario, the play-off spot is then awarded to the next highest-ranked nation in the corresponding league, determined by various factors including their position within the group, total points accumulated, and goal difference.

When is the tournament?

The draw for the play-offs is scheduled to occur in November 2023, while the subsequent play-off semi-finals and finals are set to be played from March 21 to 26, 2024.

When is the tournament?

The final tournament draw is slated to take place in December 2023 at the prestigious Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.

The teams will be seeded based on the rankings in the overall European Qualifiers. As hosts, Germany will be automatically placed in pot 1 and assigned position A1.

The play-off winners, whose identities are yet to be determined, will be positioned in pot 4 for the draw.
