Revolutionizing Romance in Baldur's Gate 3: Prepare to be Captivated!

Larian Studios gears up for Baldur's Gate 3's PS5 release with exciting plans to revamp romances, promising significant changes to enhance the critically acclaimed RPG's immersive gameplay

Highlights

Larian Studios is making changes to the romances in Baldur's Gate 3 after realizing that the companions were too quick to express their feelings for the player due to a bug.

The developer aims to enhance the realism of romancing characters in the game by modifying the approval thresholds for each character.

The initial romance bug gave rise to entertaining romance speedruns within the game's online community, resulting in the current world record standing at slightly over two minutes.

Larian Studios has recognized a need for a significant change in romances for Baldur's Gate 3. The developer acknowledges that the game's companions have been too eager to engage in romantic relationships with the player. Larian Studios has shared the reasons behind these issues, following the launch of the game on PC in August. Players have noticed that many allies, including all 10 companions and various other characters, quickly confess their feelings within a surprisingly short period of time after recruitment.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke has now confirmed that this was not what the Belgian developer intended. During an interview with TheGamer at Pax West 2023, Vincke clarified that the companions' inclination to initiate flirtation with the protagonist was simply a result of a bug. According to Vincke, each character has a concealed approval threshold designed to determine when they will begin expressing romantic interest in the player. However, all of these requirements were set too low upon the game's release, explained the Baldur's Gate 3 boss.

Larian has already adjusted the approval requirements for some companions in response to this issue and plans to update the remaining characters soon. This change will make the process of romancing characters in Baldur's Gate 3 less straightforward, aligning with Larian's goal of creating more realistic relationships rather than a comedic and overly eager supporting cast. Although the extent of the romance fixes that Larian has implemented is not specified, it is confirmed that Gale was particularly affected by this unusual bug, causing him to instantly become interested in the player.

Despite Larian's efforts to improve the realism of relationships in Baldur's Gate 3, the initial romance bug has already had a lasting impact on the RPG's online community. This can be seen through the popularity of humorous speedruns focused on romancing, which gained significant attention within weeks of the game's release. The current world record in the "Sex%" joke category is held by Canadian player maeeeeee, who recently accomplished a Baldur's Gate 3 romance in just over two minutes.

The rest of the changes to Baldur's Gate 3 romances, which Larian has yet to introduce, are expected to be implemented by the time the game is available on the current-generation Xbox consoles in late 2023. The RPG's release date for this version is still unknown, as it was originally planned for 2024. However, Microsoft allowed Larian to speed up the port by removing split-screen multiplayer functionality from the Xbox Series S at launch due to technical difficulties.

Baldur's Gate 3 is currently available for PC, with a PS5 version set to release on September 6. The Xbox Series X/S version is anticipated to launch in late 2023.
