However, when teams are introduced, the dynamics become even more intriguing. Although it was not the first game to implement this, Call of Duty: Warzone prioritizes team play more than any other battle royale game, with its gameplay mechanics and map designs specifically tailored for teams of two or more players.

The best example of this team-focused approach in Call of Duty: Warzone is the Gulag. After dying in a Warzone match, players are transported to the Gulag, where they engage in a one-on-one battle against another player for a chance to re-enter the Warzone arena. The Gulag sets Warzone apart from its competitors, although it has received mixed feedback recently. However, Raven Software plans to address this with the upcoming Urzikstan map.

Call of Duty: Warzone's New Urzikstan Gulag Makes Some Refreshing Changes

Call of Duty: Warzone announced the addition of a new map called Urzikstan during the recent Call of Duty Next event. Set to be released in December 2023 alongside Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's first Season, Urzikstan is a large-scale Warzone map featuring an abandoned industrial city in a state of disrepair. Similar to previous maps like Verdansk and Al Mazrah, Urzikstan will include various points of interest inspired by classic Call of Duty maps like Derail and Favela.

However, the most exciting feature of the new Urzikstan map might just be its Gulag. Serving as a return to basics for the battle royale series, Urzikstan's Gulag addresses the dissatisfaction fans had with the changes introduced in Call of Duty: Warzone 2. In Warzone 2, the developers experimented with a 2v2 system, a Jailer mini-boss, larger arenas, and other additions. However, this departure from the traditional Gulag didn't sit well with fans. Urzikstan's Gulag appears to be a direct response to this feedback, aiming to provide a more familiar and satisfying experience.

The Urzikstan Gulag in Call of Duty: Warzone offers a traditional 1v1 experience, with a reduced player count. It incorporates a classic 3-lane system, dividing the arena into left, right, and middle lanes, reminiscent of previous iterations. While it brings back the basics, it also introduces some innovative elements that aim to refresh the Gulag experience.

In Urzikstan's Gulag, players may occasionally find themselves fighting in complete darkness, as the arena lights may be switched off. They must rely on night-vision goggles to gain an advantage in these situations. Additionally, when the match timer expires, a rope descends from the ceiling at the center of the map. Players can use this rope to escape the Gulag, but they will be vulnerable during this process. These changes aim to infuse strategic elements into the new Gulag while maintaining the simplicity of previous versions.
