In 2014, I fell in love with The 1975's first album, which ended up being the soundtrack to the beginning of my relationship with the man who would later become my husband.
When we found out that The 1975 were performing at the Palladium in Los Angeles in November 2014, we planned a special evening. We splurged on VIP tickets and made reservations for a fancy dinner at a luxurious restaurant on Sunset Boulevard, conveniently located across from the venue.
We checked into the VIP lounge at the Palladium, a spacious balcony on the right side of the venue. Luckily, we arrived early and secured spots by the railing, protecting our view of the stage like diligent wolves.
While waiting for The 1975 to perform, we couldn't help but notice something odd happening below us. Instead of facing the stage, many young women in the crowd were turned sideways, looking up at our balcony. They were busy taking photos with their phones, but what exactly were they capturing?

We noticed right away that Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez were the center of attention, standing about fifteen feet to our left.
Thanks to the curve of the balcony in the VIP area, we had a great view of the two stars as they interacted with their fans below. After waving and blowing kisses to the crowd, they turned around, shared laughs, and sipped cocktails with their friends. Before long, Ellie Goulding joined them.
Finally, the lights dimmed and The 1975 took the stage. Swift and Gomez were in full fangirl mode, leaning over the railing and screaming along with every song. It was amusing to see the fans on the venue’s floor switching between cheering for Matty Healy and then for Swift.
I wasn’t completely impressed with The 1975’s performance, and my attention started drifting towards Swift and her actions. Having worked in magazines for a while, I knew that most celebrities didn't behave like this at shows without a reason. I began to wonder if Swift was just a huge fan of The 1975, or if there was something more going on between her and the singer.
Healy finally spoke to the crowd about halfway through the show. He greeted them with a cheerful "Hello Los Angeleeeeeez" and announced that they would be relocating to Los Angeles in April. The crowd reacted predictably, going wild with excitement. Swift joined in on the excitement, shouting "Oh yeah" and raising her fists in the air. She then turned to Gomez and whispered something to her, to which Gomez responded with a smile and a nod.
A little later, before the band performed “fallingforyou,” Healy asked the crowd to put away their phones and “embrace the moment.” A hush fell over the crowd as Healy and the band finally clicked, delivering a gorgeous version of the song.
I watched Swift as the song played, her eyes closed much of the time, one hand on her heart. When the song ended, she made a heart shape with her hands, holding it in the direction of the stage. It was clear that she was completely smitten with Healy.
A few songs later, Healy unbuttoned his shirt to show his chest tattoo, which made Swift scream and fan herself, causing me to laugh.
But the highlight of the show happened at the end when the band announced that "Chocolate" would be their final song of the night. The crowd refused to let them go, especially since they hadn't performed their biggest hit, "Sex."
Who is your favorite ex of Taylor Swift?
The crowd at the venue started chanting "We want Sex, we want Sex" and Swift along with Gomez joined in, leaning over the railing and clapping along, shouting the same and laughing. The band eventually played the song and the audience went wild. While the song was still playing, Swift and Gomez left, choosing to take the elevator at the back of the balcony instead of the stairs leading into the crowd.
A few days later, I found out that Swift and Healy were officially dating. It wasn't unexpected. When The 1975 dropped their second album a couple of years later, it was entertaining to try and figure out which songs were inspired by Healy's past relationship with Swift.
