Minnie Driver, 54, recently shared her thoughts on how she handled her breakup with Matt Damon, her costar in the movie Good Will Hunting. During an episode of The Jennifer Hudson Show on Thursday, March 14, Driver reacted to a picture of herself taken during Damon's Oscar win for the film in 1997.
When she saw the image, Driver exclaimed, "Oh my God, my little face!" She expressed a desire to comfort her younger self, saying, "First of all, I want to wrap my arms around that young woman and hug her and go, 'It's all going to be fine. Like, honey, don't worry.'"
Driver dated Damon, 53, from 1997 to early 1998 before he publicly proclaimed on a talk show that he was “single.” Weeks later, the pair reunited at the Oscars when they were both nominated for their roles in Good Will Hunting. (Damon also cowrote the script with longtime friend Ben Affleck.)
“He had a new girlfriend [and] I was totally heartbroken, but anyone who’s been heartbroken can understand the last thing you want is everybody having a window in on that,” she recalled to host Jennifer Hudson.
A social media user shared a video from the 1998 Academy Awards in December 2023. In the footage, Driver made a comment mentioning that she was mourning their relationship during that time.
Driver discussed the public nature of the event and her recent Instagram comment. She explained that she came across the clip for the first time and had never seen her own reaction when they won.

She continued, “They cut to me because there was a camera right in the face of the poor, young 25-year-old girl who was about to burst into tears. It was so raw and vulnerable that I commented, “Gosh, I was devastated. I wish I could have celebrated more as it was such an amazing moment.’ Which it was.”
On Thursday, she further detailed the advice she would give her younger self in that moment.
"Reflecting back with perfect vision, I wish I could have reassured her that everything will be okay. Life will have its ups and downs, but it will also be filled with beauty and challenges that will make you stronger. You will find love again and things will work out in the end," Driver shared. "Our heartbreak may feel personal, but as public figures, it can become a shared experience. Let's connect on a human level and understand that we all go through similar struggles, just viewed through different perspectives."

Damon found love again with Luciana Barroso, whom he married in December 2005. Together, they have three daughters named Isabella, Gia, and Stella. Damon also became a stepfather to Barroso’s daughter from a previous relationship, Alexia. On the other hand, Minnie Driver is a mother to her 15-year-old son, Henry. Since 2019, she has been in a relationship with filmmaker Addison O’Dea.
Driver and Damon saw each other for the first time since their breakup in 2021. During a podcast in September 2021, Driver mentioned that he hadn't spoken to Damon seriously since they worked together on a film the previous summer. Seeing Damon, along with his wife and kids, on the beach felt quite middle-aged and reassuring.
She said, "I think a lot of the foolishness of our youth played a role in our early relationship, it felt exciting and dramatic. So it was refreshing to just have a mature conversation about simple things like the weather."
