Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized the importance of space projects during a meeting with government officials on Thursday. He stated that these projects, including the establishment of a nuclear power unit in space, should be given top priority and adequate funding. According to state news agency TASS, Putin highlighted Russia's strong competencies and reserves in space technology, expressing pride in the country's capabilities for future endeavors.
“We need to finance it on time,” Putin said, according to TASS.
“We just need to set priorities,” he said, adding “there are issues there that require additional attention.”
Putin emphasized the importance of developing unique competencies that can be used in the future to solve specific tasks with the help of technologies.
Last week, Yuri Borisov, the head of Russia’s space agency Roscosmos, mentioned that Russia and China are collaborating on a project to install a nuclear reactor on the moon, as reported by TASS.

Putin is increasing his talk about nuclear weapons leading up to the Russian election. This follows reports from CNN that Russia is working on a nuclear space weapon that could cause major damage to satellites.
A new type of weapon, referred to by military space experts as a nuclear EMP, is being developed. This weapon would release electromagnetic energy and charged particles that could disrupt satellites orbiting Earth.
According to Biden administration officials, this weapon is still in the development stage in Russia and has not been deployed in orbit. However, if used, it would mark a significant milestone in the history of nuclear weapons and could potentially cause widespread disruptions to daily life in unpredictable ways.

President Putin's emphasis on space projects, particularly the establishment of a nuclear power unit, raises concerns about the potential militarization of space. While Russia has a strong history in space exploration, the development of nuclear capabilities in space could escalate tensions and increase the risk of conflict. It is crucial for all nations to prioritize the peaceful use of space and to work together to prevent its weaponization.
The reported collaboration between Russia and China on a lunar nuclear reactor project highlights the growing international cooperation in space exploration. However, the potential for nuclear accidents or the use of such technologies for military purposes must be carefully considered and addressed. It is imperative that all space exploration endeavors prioritize safety and transparency, and that international agreements are established to regulate the use of nuclear power in space.
