Russia's President, Vladimir Putin, has declared the successful completion of a test for a cutting-edge nuclear-powered cruise missile, known as the Burevestnik. According to the state news agency RIA Novosti, Putin stated that the missile possesses a global-range and incorporates a nuclear installation with an advanced nuclear propulsion system.
Putin delivered a speech at the Valdai Forum in Sochi, where he announced the Burevestnik development program in March 2018. This initiative aimed to develop a new range of intercontinental and hypersonic missiles, including the Kinzhal ballistic missile and the Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle. Sending a direct message to the West, he urged, "Listen to us now."
During his address to the Federal Assembly in March 2018, Putin emphasized the objective of establishing a long-term strategic equilibrium worldwide, highlighting the inclusion of the Burevestnik and Sarmat missiles.
Putin described the Burevestnik and Sarmat missiles as low-flying stealth missiles equipped with nuclear warheads, possessing exceptional range, unpredictable flight paths, and the capability to evade interception systems.
However, according to Western analysts, the program has faced difficulties and experienced several unsuccessful tests. In 2019, the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), a well-known analytical group, stated that based on press reports and alleged confirmation from U.S. intelligence services, the Burevestnik has been tested 13 times, achieving only two partial successes.
Quoting Russian military expert Alexei Leonkov, the NTI described the Burevestnik as a retaliatory weapon intended for use by Russia following Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles attacks. Its purpose would be to completely destroy military and civilian infrastructure, leaving no chance of survival.
