This Gengar costume is exclusive to Pokemon GO's Halloween 2023 event and is inspired by a plush being sold at Pokemon Centers. However, there is a noticeable difference. Unlike the plush version, the Pokemon GO costume lacks the chef jacket, which has left many players puzzled by its appearance. Although the costume includes the chef hat and sushi decorations on Gengar's head, some players have compared it to wearing garbage.
The intention behind the Gengar sushi chef costume is for it to wear a white and yellow coat that covers most of its body. This isn't the first time Gengar has received a costume for Halloween in Pokemon GO. In the past, players could catch a Gengar dressed as Banette in 2020, and the Spooky Festival of 2022 featured Gengar with a witch hat. Comparing this year's Gengar costume to previous years, it seems to be the least impressive for Gengar fans. Since players can't catch Gengar in costumes from previous years, the sushi chef version is currently the only option available.
The Pokémon GO Gengar costume does not include the jacket featured on the Pokémon plush it is based on, which may result in adjustments in the future. In comparison to previous versions of the costume, the current one is not as well-received, potentially leading to fewer players participating in Halloween festivities this year. As an enthusiastic fan of Pokémon GO, I am greatly disappointed with the Gengar Halloween costume featured in the 2023 event. The costume, which depicts Gengar as a sushi chef, lacks the chef jacket that was present in the plush version of the costume, leaving many players, including myself, confused and underwhelmed.
The Halloween event in Pokémon GO has always been a highlight for me, and I have always looked forward to seeing the unique costumes that Niantic would release for the occasion. In previous years, we have seen Gengar dressed as Banette and a witch, both of which were well-received by the community. However, this year's costume feels like a step backward, and it is disheartening to see that Niantic did not put more effort into creating a more visually appealing and thematically appropriate costume for Gengar.
Furthermore, the fact that players cannot catch Gengar in costumes from previous years makes the sushi chef version even more disappointing, as it is the only option currently available. I hope that Niantic will listen to the feedback from the community and consider making adjustments to the Gengar costume to bring it more in line with the seasonal theme and the expectations of players. Overall, I am disappointed with the Gengar Halloween costume in Pokémon GO this year, and I hope that Niantic will do better in the future.
