Grayson Murray, aged 30, tragically died by suicide on Saturday, May 25. His parents, Eric and Terry, shared their heartbreaking statement through the PGA on Sunday, May 26. They expressed their disbelief and sorrow, struggling to accept the reality of their son's passing. The pain is unimaginable as they come to terms with the loss and face the daunting task of sharing this devastating news with the world. It's a heartbreaking nightmare that they never thought they would experience.
"We want to express our gratitude to the PGA Tour and the golf community for the overwhelming support. Grayson faced challenges in life, but we find comfort in knowing he is at peace now."
Murray's parents mentioned that they have many unanswered questions, except for one.
Yes, Grayson was loved. His brother Cameron, sister Erica, extended family, friends, fellow players, and many of you who are reading this all loved him. He will be missed.
In addition, Eric and Terry are asking for privacy as they navigate through this heartbreaking tragedy.
They concluded by asking everyone to honor Grayson by being kind to one another. They believed that if kindness became his legacy, there could be no greater tribute.
The PGA announced Murray’s passing on Saturday through a statement from commissioner Jay Monahan.
"We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of PGA Tour player Grayson Murray this morning. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan expressed his sorrow, stating, "I am at a loss for words. The PGA Tour is like a family, and losing a member of our family is a devastating blow. Our thoughts are with Grayson's loved ones during this difficult time."
Monahan also shared that he personally spoke with Grayson's parents to offer his condolences. During their conversation, Grayson's parents requested that tournament play continue as scheduled. They firmly believed that Grayson would have wanted the tournaments to go on. In honoring their wishes, the PGA Tour will proceed with the events, despite the challenges that lie ahead."
The PGA is now holding the Charles Schwab Challenge tournament in Fort Worth, Texas. Murray had joined the competition but had to drop out due to an undisclosed illness.
Murray is remembered by his parents, siblings, and fiancée Christiana Ritchie.
Murray turned professional in 2015 and has achieved success with two PGA Tour victories. Throughout his journey, he has been open about his struggles with depression.
In a post on social media in July 2017, Murray shared, "Everyone faces their own challenges every day. Some may conceal it better than others. The first step to seeking assistance is acknowledging that you need it." He continued, "Thankfully, I acknowledged my need for support with depression and anxiety a few years ago, and it truly changed my life. It's a battle I confront daily. It doesn't disappear, it will always be there, but there are ways to manage it."
