Phil Mickelson shared on Monday that his gambling addiction had a devastating impact on his life, comparing it to a "hurricane" that caused significant harm. The renowned golfer, who has been open about his challenges with sports gambling in the past, took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to discuss his journey battling this addiction in relation to the start of the NFL season.
"Many of you will find joy and entertainment in this football season, while maintaining a balanced approach," stated the six-time major winner. "Engaging in fantasy leagues will create friendly banter and any monetary gains or losses from betting will not have a detrimental impact on you."
Mickelson disclosed his decision to refrain from wagering on the NFL this season due to the negative impact it had on his personal life and relationships. He referred to this issue as surpassing moderation and leading to addiction, which he found unenjoyable.

Mickelson expressed that the issue was never about money, as his financial security has always been intact. However, he admitted to being extremely distracted, which prevented him from being fully present with his loved ones and caused significant harm. Mickelson acknowledged that his lack of presence has been deeply painful. People have often told him that although he is physically present, he is not truly with them due to his addiction. He was unaware of how his actions affected those he cares about and struggled to fully comprehend it. He likened his experience to being sheltered from a raging hurricane, unaware of the destruction happening outside. Upon finally facing the aftermath, he felt overwhelmed by the extensive damage and simply wanted to retreat back into isolation rather than dealing with it.
The 53-year-old expressed his deep appreciation for his wife Amy, acknowledging her vital role in supporting him during his toughest moments.
"I am immensely grateful for her unwavering support," he stated. "Without her, I would not have been able to navigate this challenging journey. Her love, strength, and dedication have propelled me towards becoming the person I aspire to be, and I cannot thank her enough."
Last month, Mickelson denied claims that he considered betting on the 2012 Ryder Cup - in which he was participating.

United States defeats Great Britain and Ireland in Walker Cup and professional gambler Billy Walters claims that Mickelson's gambling losses amounted to nearly $100 million. Walters further alleges that Mickelson placed over $1 billion in bets over the past thirty years, including more than 7,000 wagers made between 2010 and 2014.
CNN has not been able to verify these claims independently. Mickelson has denied attempting to place a bet on the 2012 Ryder Cup. In his statement on X, he emphasized his enjoyment of friendly wagers on the golf course and asserted that he would never compromise the game's integrity.
Mickelson mentioned in his Monday post that, with the assistance of professionals for his addiction, he has achieved the ability to remain still, be fully engaged in the present moment, and experience daily serenity and tranquility.
He further acknowledged, "Although I still have a significant amount of work to do in repairing my relationships with my loved ones, I am making progress at a gradual pace and doing my utmost."
Mickelson proceeded to offer advice to individuals who may be grappling with gambling issues.
"During this football season and beyond, make sure to indulge in moderation so that it doesn't compromise your ability to be fully engaged," he stated. "Based on my personal experience, the moments spent with loved ones will be far more cherished than any winnings from bets or triumphs in fantasy leagues."
Mickelson, who failed to qualify for the US team in the upcoming Ryder Cup in Rome, was not chosen as a captains pick by Zach Johnson either. His decision to join the Saudi-backed LIV Golf tour in 2022, instead of remaining with the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour, stirred controversy as he was among the first golf superstars to make such a move.
