Rory McIlroy steps down from PGA Tour policy board, ending his role as player director The Northern Irish golfer's resignation was officially announced by the tour on Tuesday

PGA Tour player director, Rory McIlroy, has officially stepped down from his role due to personal and professional obligations, according to a statement from the organization on Tuesday.

McIlroy had been a member of the player advisory council for three years before serving on the board for a duration of two years. The announcement of his decision, made by the world's second-ranked golfer, coincided with the ongoing discussions to reach a final agreement involving the PGA Tour, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), and the DP World Tour (formerly known as the European Tour). This announcement, made on June 6, caused a significant impact within the golfing community.

All three organizations have agreed to merge their golf-related commercial businesses and rights, including the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series, with the commercial businesses and rights of the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. This collaboration will result in the formation of a new, collectively owned for-profit entity.

Tiger Woods and other prominent US athletes prepare to launch a state-of-the-art indoor golf league, following the surprising June revelation. Expressing "mixed emotions," McIlroy, a notable figure in the sport, has been highly critical of the Saudi breakaway league.

On Tuesday, prior to his resignation announcement, McIlroy expressed optimism about the future of golf.

"In terms of finances, the professional game is currently at its strongest and healthiest," McIlroy remarked during a press conference on Tuesday, preceding the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

He added that there has never been a more favorable period for professional golfers. When questioned about the advancement of the proposed merger between the three professional golf organizations, McIlroy stated that those outside the loop lack any specific information. He emphasized the importance of maintaining confidentiality and ensuring that information remains restricted. McIlroy expressed confidence that any updates regarding the merger will be disclosed at the appropriate time.

McIlroy implied that he faced difficulties in his position as a player director, as it was not what he had initially agreed to when joining the board.

However, he acknowledged that professional golf has experienced significant changes and uncertainties in the past two years. Despite this, he believes that the sport, as a whole, is in excellent condition. Nevertheless, people tend to solely concentrate on the elite level of the game due to its nature as an entertainment product and show. McIlroy emphasizes the importance of resolving these issues promptly for the benefit of all involved.

McIlroy's term was scheduled to end in 2024. Per the "PGA TOUR Tournament Regulations," when a player director resigns, the remaining player directors choose a successor to complete the rest of their term.
