Patrick Wilson, who makes his directorial debut with Insidious: The Red Door, is uncertain about taking on the role of director for The Conjuring: Last Rites. Wilson, known for his role as paranormal investigator Ed Warren in The Conjuring universe, is set to return for a fourth film alongside Vera Farmiga as his wife Lorraine. Prior to that, Wilson will release Insidious: The Red Door, where he also reprises his role as Josh Lambert, on July 7.
During an interview with ComicBook for Insidious: The Red Door, Wilson was asked if he would consider directing The Conjuring 4. Wilson, now an actor-turned-director, responded thoughtfully, stating that he would need to evaluate the story before making a decision. He emphasized the importance of a project resonating with him before agreeing to step behind the camera again. Read Wilson's complete statement below:
I am unsure, as all of those individuals are clearly my close friends whom I know well, and I would never attempt to present myself for something I didn't genuinely care about. Therefore, the absolute truth, and I truly mean this, even though it may sound cliché, is that I would need to see the story. I am confident that our characters and our roles as actors will be taken care of. I have an immense love for those films. I have deep admiration for the work of David Leslie Johnson and all the writing he has done. However, if there's one thing I have learned from this movie, it's what James told me, which is to "Make it yours. Make it personal."
Hence, for the next movie that I decide to pursue or that chooses me, it must be something deeply personal that I can mold according to my own beliefs. I can work on this film because I centered it around a father and son relationship, drawing from my own experiences as a kid in art school. I went to theatre college, so there were aspects that I felt a profound passion for, as I am fully devoted. Not a day has passed in the last four years where I haven't thought about this movie. Therefore, regardless of whether it's Conjuring or any other film, there is a distinct requirement as a director. It's not just about the technicalities, it's about whether it resonates with you as a director.
What We Know About The Conjuring 4
Content:
Titled The Conjuring: Last Rites, the fourth installment in The Conjuring universe is expected to be the final film in the horror franchise. James Wan, the producer of the franchise and the original director, had previously hinted that the fourth film would potentially conclude the story of Ed and Lorraine Warren. Apart from the return of Wilson and Farmiga as the paranormal investigators, no other details regarding the cast, story, or release date of The Conjuring 4 have been confirmed.
David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who wrote The Conjuring 2 and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, will be returning to write The Conjuring: Last Rites. As for the director, it has not been announced yet, but Michael Chaves, who directed the last installment, which received mixed reviews, is not returning. There is a possibility that Wilson might be considered for the role if his directorial debut, Insidious: The Red Door, is successful, indicating his potential as a horror filmmaker.
