Bartholomew Kuma remains a mysterious figure among One Piece fans. As a former Warlord of the Sea and a member of the Revolutionary Army, his motives and loyalty are subjects of intense debate. Equally puzzling are the unique properties of his Devil Fruit, known as the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi or Paw Paw Fruit.
This particular Devil Fruit grants Kuma the ability to repel virtually anything that he touches, earning him the nickname "Paw Human." Classified as a Paramecia type, the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi stands out among other fruits in this category for several reasons.
Firstly, it alters Kuma's appearance, giving him paws on the palms of his hands. These paws serve as the primary means by which he utilizes his powers. Kuma typically wears gloves when not in combat, ensuring that his abilities are not accidentally activated. Interestingly, one can distinguish between Kuma and the Pacifista, which are cybernetic clones of him employed by the World Government, by the absence of paw prints on their hands.
While Dr. Vegapunk has conducted extensive research on the abilities of the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi, many aspects of its true nature remain shrouded in mystery.
The Power To Repel
The repulsive power of the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi is activated when Kuma presents an open palm to his targets. A paw-shaped bubble is then formed around them, forcefully pushing them away at incredibly high speeds. This ability allows Kuma to deflect most physical or energy-based attacks directed towards him, although it may not work against attacks infused with Haki or substances such as Seastone which negate Devil Fruit abilities. It is important to note that this power can only be activated with the user's bare hands, and attacks aimed at other parts of their body will be effective if they cannot react swiftly enough.
In addition to its defensive use, the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi can also be employed offensively. The user can repel the air around them, turning it into a weapon. They can apply this power to objects and even liquids, creating various effects. Some of these attacks have been shown to be powerful enough to leave imprints in rock, showcasing the immense force behind Kuma's abilities. Furthermore, Kuma can utilize this power to travel long distances instantly. Although it may appear as teleportation, it is actually achieved by propelling himself or his targets across the desired distance at tremendous speeds.
An Anomaly In The Paramecia Class
The power possessed by this ability is truly formidable, as it effortlessly overcame and scattered the entire Straw Hat Pirates crew to various destinations chosen by its user. This occurred during the Sabaody Archipelago Arc, leaving the crew utterly defenseless with no opportunity to retaliate or even comprehend what had just transpired. While journeying, they were all enveloped within protective bubbles shaped like paws, shielding them from virtually any harm in their path, except for extremely resilient obstacles. In such instances, not only would they be brought to a standstill, but they would also sustain injuries from the impact, as exemplified when Kuma attempted to breach the Red Line. Once they reached their designated destinations, the bubbles dissipated, leaving each member of the Straw Hat crew sprawled within the center of a colossal paw print imprinted on the ground upon their landing.Beyond their impressive abilities, the true intrigue lies in the intangible entities that the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi can repel. Kuma has demonstrated his Devil Fruit powers by repelling things such as pain, memories, and the ethereal specters conjured by Perona's Horo Horo no Mi abilities. These intangible substances are contained within paw-shaped bubbles, accessible to anyone who comes into contact with them. In the Egghead Island Arc, Jewelry Bonney stumbled upon a paw-shaped bubble brimming with Kuma's memories within Vegapunk's laboratory – solid proof of the effectiveness of this extraordinary power.
In the Thriller Bark Arc, Zoro used his power to negotiate with Kuma, offering to take on all the pain Luffy suffered from his fight with Gecko Moria. Kuma then used his ability to extract Luffy's pain and fatigue, creating a paw-shaped bubble. Zoro entered the bubble and endured intense pain, refusing to disclose his experience to his crewmates. Later, Kuma's powers were transferred to his corresponding Seraphim, thanks to one of Vegapunk's inventions.
Additionally, Kuma showcased several techniques that utilize his fruit's power. "Pad Ho" repels air and sends shock waves forward, while "Puni" defends against attacks. "Tsuppari Pad Ho" expands on this technique, as Kuma plants his feet like a sumo wrestler and repels multiple bursts of air at a target. Finally, "Ursus Shock" involves Kuma gathering compressed air in a paw-shaped bubble between his palms and generating a powerful explosion when fired at a target. Thus, Kuma possesses an incredible range of abilities.
