One Piece producer Becky Clements has hinted at the new characters that may make their debut in season 2. The live-action adaptation of Oda Eichirou's popular manga follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, portrayed by Inaki Godoy, a determined young boy who embarks on a journey across the sea in search of a legendary treasure. Since its release on Netflix on August 31, season 1 of One Piece has been a hugely successful show.
As fans eagerly await the possibility of a second season, producers Clements and Marty Adelstein recently spoke to Deadline about the process of bringing the manga to life on screen and its future. They discussed various elements, characters, and plotlines with Netflix, Oda, and manga publisher Shuiesha, and made sure to focus on the elements that they believed capture the essence of One Piece, including a surprise cameo in the final episode that hints at the direction of the story. Below is a full excerpt of Clements' statement.
We collaborate closely with Netflix, Shueisha (a manga publisher), and Oda-san as we value their input. We have extensively discussed potential storylines for Season 2 and briefly touched upon ideas for seasons three to six. However, we all agree that certain elements from the manga are indispensable and serve as our guiding principle. These are the stories and characters that are cherished by fans, and they will form the foundation for future seasons. While death does exist in One Piece, we do not dwell on it excessively. One of the unique aspects of One Piece lies in its captivating villains. They bring excitement to the series, and we would love to see them return whenever possible.
Where Could The Straw Hat Pirates Head Next In One Piece Season 2?
The end of the season not only marks a natural conclusion but also serves as a precursor to the upcoming chapter of the manga. This deliberate addition was meant to provide fans with a familiar reference point that hints at the direction we are taking. It was a carefully planned decision made after filming, as we wanted to assure fans that we have a creative strategy in place that aims to delight them.In the season 1 finale of One Piece, titled "Worst in the West," several storylines were introduced for potential future developments. While Luffy and his friends celebrated their newfound fame as pirates, the final montage also revealed the vengeful intentions of Buggy (played by Jeff Ward) and Alvida (played by Ilia Isorelys Paulino), as they sought retribution against the aspiring pirate king. This sets the stage for their return in the future. Additionally, Garp (played by Vincent Reagan) officially took Koby (played by Morgan Davies) and Helmeppo (played by Aidan Scott) under his wing, mentoring them to become marines and paving their way from cadets to skilled operatives.

The first season of One Piece concluded with the introduction of a mysterious and heavy-smoking villain named Smoker. He is a marine vice-admiral who served as the antagonist during the Loguetown arc. In this arc, the Straw Hat crew faced multiple enemies while gathering supplies before their journey to the Grand Line. Although "Worst in the West" adapted scenes from both the beginning and end of the arc, Netflix's One Piece rearranged the events to better suit the show's structure. As a result, Loguetown may still be the next destination for the crew, especially considering the significant roles played by Smoker, Buggy, and Alvida in that arc.
One Piece season 2 has already been scripted and stories have been hinted at in season 1, indicating that Clements and the production team have a clear vision. Although the changes made in season 1 and discussions about potential further changes may cause some caution, the involvement of Oda and Shueisha could alleviate those concerns. Therefore, if Netflix greenlights One Piece season 2, viewers can feel reassured that the show's creators have laid a solid foundation for upcoming adventures.
