Olivia Rodrigo's music video for "Bad Idea Right?" has captivated everyone's attention, not just because of its secretly profound lyrics. Released on Friday, August 11, the track revolves around Rodrigo, who at 20 years old, contemplates the idea of reuniting with an ex-boyfriend.
"‘Bad Idea Right?’ initially began as a humorous song centered around my past relationship with an ex-boyfriend. However, we soon realized that there was potential in what we were creating," shared the singer with Rolling Stone. "We experimented with unconventional elements, including a section in the chorus where a seemingly background instrument gradually escalates into my own increasingly loud screams."
"Bad Idea Right?" cleverly incorporates significant nods to popular television series such as Glee and Euphoria. During Rodrigo's bus journey to her ex-boyfriend's house, she undergoes an unexpected encounter with a red slushie, evoking memories of Rachel Berry's (Lea Michele) incident in season 6 of Glee.
In the later part of the video, Rodrigo imitates Maddy Perez's memorable act of banging on a bathroom door in the second season premiere of Max's Euphoria, when she knocks on her mysterious man's door.
Observant fans have noticed a number of intriguing elements in the music video, directed by Petra Collins and starring Rodrigo's real-life friends Tate McRae, Iris Apatow, and Madison Hu.
Rodrigo has released her second song from the upcoming Guts album, titled "Bad Idea Right?". This sophomore effort comes after more than two years since her debut single "Driver's License" went viral in January 2021. Following the success of her debut album, Sour, which was released four months later, Rodrigo received widespread acclaim for hit tracks such as "Good 4 U" and "Deja Vu."
Rodrigo recently reflected on how her music has evolved since Sour dominated the music charts.

"This album delves into the challenges of personal growth and the journey of self-discovery," she revealed in a June press release. "Between the ages of 18 and 20, I experienced a significant transformation, marked by intense moments of uncertainty and change. It's all part of the natural process of maturing, and I hope that the album truly captures that essence."
During the same month, Rodrigo expanded on the motivation behind Guts in a newsletter to her fans, saying, "I crafted the majority of this album during my nineteenth year of existence. It was a year filled with confusion, mistakes, awkwardness, and the classic teenage angst. I worked on it alongside my friend Dan, traversing between New York and L.A., and I am immensely proud of the result. I cannot express enough how thrilled I am to embark on this new chapter of my life with all of you. See you on September 8th!!!"
