Olivia Munn found comfort and healing in her 2-year-old son, Malcolm, during her battle with breast cancer.
In a video shared on her Instagram Story on April 22, the 43-year-old actress was seen laughing with her little one near a pool. She revealed that this moment took place last summer, after she had undergone three surgeries and was facing a challenging recovery both mentally and physically. Despite the difficulties, moments like this with Malcolm brought her joy and lifted her spirits every time.
Munn, who is in a relationship with John Mulaney, shared a video of Malcolm back in January. In the post, she expressed how grateful she is to have him in her life and how she wishes she had known earlier about him.
In March, the actress opened up about being diagnosed with breast cancer in the previous year.
In February of 2023, I decided to take a genetic test to be proactive about my health. The test checks for 90 different cancer genes. I shared in an Instagram post that I tested negative for all, including BRCA, which is the most well-known breast cancer gene. My sister Sara [Potts] also tested negative, and we celebrated over the phone. During that same winter, I had a normal mammogram.
Two months later, I received my diagnosis. Over the past ten months, I have undergone four surgeries, spent countless days in bed, and gained a wealth of knowledge about cancer, cancer treatment, and hormones. It has been a challenging journey, but I am grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow from this experience.
Munn recently opened up about why she chose to keep her health scare private. She shared that she preferred to show herself to the public when she had the energy to do so, like when she could dress up and go out with her baby boy. The diagnosis, worry, recovery process, pain medication, and hospital gowns were all kept private. She felt the need to take a step back, deal with the tough parts, and catch her breath before sharing her experience.
Olivia, on her Instagram account (@oliviamunn), shared that she considers herself fortunate. She mentioned, "We caught it with enough time that I had options." She expressed her wish for every woman to have the same opportunity if they ever have to deal with a similar situation.
Munn expressed gratitude towards her family and friends, thanking them for their love and support during her challenging time. She specifically mentioned her appreciation for her partner John, who took the time to research and understand every aspect of her treatments, surgeries, and medications. He was by her side before and after each surgery, ensuring that she woke up to see framed photos of their son Malcolm.
In a recent interview with People, Munn shared more about her recovery journey, including how she chose to cover the scars from her double mastectomy surgery.
She shared, "I have some divots and dents on one side of my body near where the lymph nodes were. They had to really dig out. I’ve been wearing some dresses on the red carpet that made me a little stressed out at times."
Munn also mentioned that she allowed her hair to grow out to conceal the scars. "Sometimes when I look in the mirror, I notice how long my hair has grown because of this," she admitted. "It makes me a little sad that I still feel the need to hide certain aspects. But then I remind myself that those are battle wounds. I can choose to show them or hide them whenever I want."
Navigating her health scare has been a challenge for Munn, but she is learning to be kind to herself. She shared, "I don’t criticize myself for how I feel each day, I simply allow myself to experience it." Munn mentioned that there is a sense of calm that comes with this approach.
