O.J. Simpson Passes Away at 76 Following Cancer Struggle

The family of O.J. Simpson has announced his passing at the age of 76 after bravely fighting cancer.

O.J. Simpson, aged 76, passed away.

The Simpson family announced on April 11 that their father, Orenthal James Simpson, lost his battle with cancer on April 10. He was with his children and grandchildren during his final moments. The family has requested privacy and understanding during this difficult time.

Simpson is survived by his children Arnelle, Jason, Aaren, Sydney, and Justin. Arnelle, Jason, and Aaren were shared with his first wife Marguerite Whitley, while Sydney and Justin were welcomed with his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson.

In February, there were reports that Simpson was receiving treatment for prostate cancer. The former NFL star addressed rumors of being in hospice care during that time.

“Hey X world, hospice? Hospice? You’re talking about hospice?” he shared in a video from a car uploaded to X on February 9. “I don’t know who put that out there.”

Simpson shared with his followers that he was having a lot of friends over for the Super Bowl, which was happening in Las Vegas at the time.

In the video, Simpson reassured his viewers by saying, "Everything is fine. Take care, everyone, and have a great Super Bowl weekend."

Simpson’s final X post was uploaded on February 11 before the social media announcement about his death. In the clip, he was wearing a San Francisco 49ers jersey and predicted that the California-based team would win Super Bowl LVIII. (The Kansas City Chiefs ultimately defeated the 49ers.)

Although Simpson initially gained fame as an NFL star, his reputation took a dark turn after the 1994 murders of his ex-wife, Brown Simpson, and Ron Goldman. Both were fatally stabbed, and Simpson was arrested for their deaths, leading to one of the biggest trials of the century.

In 1995, Simpson was acquitted of murder charges, but he was later found guilty for wrongful death and battery against Goldman in a civil suit. More than two decades after the trial, it became the subject of FX’s American Crime Story: The People v. O. J. Simpson, which was released in 2016. Cuba Gooding Jr. played Simpson. Simpson has also been brought up in popular culture over the years due to his connections to the Kardashians. (Simpson and Brown Simpson were friends of Robert Kardashian Sr. and Kris Jenner.)

While he was not charged for murder, Simpson was later arrested in 2007. He was found guilty of kidnapping and armed robbery in 2008. Simpson was sentenced to serve nine to 33 years in prison and was released on parole in 2021 after serving the minimum sentence. (His parole hearing was held in November of that year but he was not released until December 2021.

“Mr. Simpson is a completely free man now,” Malcolm LaVergne, Simpson’s lawyer, told We in a statement at the time.
