A lawsuit has been filed against Niantic, the studio behind Pokemon GO, by a former employee alleging discrimination against female employees, specifically women of color. The accusations suggest that the company favors male employees, leading to a hostile environment for female staff. This is not an isolated incident, as game companies have faced similar accusations in the past, with Blizzard being sued last year. The lawsuit has shed light on pay disparities between male and female workers. The former employee, who wishes to remain anonymous, was among the 230 staff laid off recently as Niantic decided to prioritize Pokemon GO over other projects.
The Jane Doe, who is bringing the lawsuit, asserts that despite holding a higher job title than her male counterpart, he was receiving a higher salary. It has been alleged that in 2022, the male employee was earning $127,000 annually, whereas she was earning $105,000. There is currently no information available regarding Niantic's potential move to dismiss the lawsuit.
Jane Doe alleges in her lawsuit that she received lower pay compared to her male colleagues. Additionally, she discovered from a job listing that her salary was over $10,000 below the minimum average pay for her position. Jane Doe brought her concerns to Niantic's Diversity Equity and Inclusion Director and Principal People Partner but faced hostility. Similar concerns about pay and a sexist work culture have been raised by other women working at Niantic, similar to female employees at Sony's Playstation studios. While these claims are currently allegations, it is crucial that they are treated with utmost seriousness and handled carefully.
