On Monday, the New Orleans Saints announced that an NFL official who collided with running back Alvin Kamara suffered a fractured fibula and dislocated knee. The official will undergo surgery for the injuries. The incident occurred during the second quarter of the game against the Detroit Lions, when Kamara was tackled near the sideline of the Caesars Superdome and fell to the ground.
The 28-year-old Kamara collided with the legs of Nick Piazza, an official on the team responsible for moving the first down measure. TV cameras captured Piazza clutching his leg, which appeared to be bent at an awkward angle, and shouting in pain before cutting away.
During the game, play was halted for a few minutes while medical staff attended to Piazza. He was then carried off the field and taken to the hospital. As a result, the chain crew operated with one less member for the remainder of the game.
The Saints reported that on Monday, Piazza had an MRI and was examined by an orthopedic doctor. The results showed that he had a fractured fibula and a dislocated knee, but his blood vessels were not affected. Piazza is expected to undergo surgery, likely next week.
"He appreciates the many well wishes and the continued care he continues to receive," the Saints said.
