Netflix's new action-comedy series, Obliterated, may seem like a departure from the team behind the hit series Cobra Kai. While Cobra Kai revolves around karate and '80s nostalgia, Obliterated is filled with adult themes like sex, drugs, alcohol, and the threat of a nuclear apocalypse. Despite the stark differences, the series is well within the comfort zone of showrunners Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald. These writers found success in raunchy R-rated films before they created Cobra Kai. So, Obliterated is actually a return to familiar territory for them after years of writing for teenage characters. Nevertheless, the shift initially came as a shock.
"We come from that R-rated world," Schlossberg explained. "We love comedy that pushes the envelope. Working on Cobra Kai, that tone doesn't really play into the Karate Kid universe. So we don't use that part of our brains when we write Cobra Kai."
However, Obliterated certainly pushes the envelope in almost every conceivable way, making sense in the world of this series. The experience of Cobra Kai has certainly influenced the way the story of Obliterated unfolds.
"We've learned a great deal from Cobra Kai in terms of filming action scenes and developing characters throughout the seasons. Ultimately, wrapping up Season 5 of Cobra Kai while knowing Obliterated was on the horizon gave us a feeling similar to enjoying our favorite comfort food. In this case, our favorite comfort food happens to be a wild show about government operatives trying to locate and deactivate a nuclear weapon while intoxicated and under the influence."
Obliterated hits Netflix on November 30.

1. As a fan of Cobra Kai, I was initially surprised to hear about the creators' new project, Obliterated. Cobra Kai is a beloved family-friendly series, so it was unexpected for the team to suddenly shift gears and create an R-rated action-comedy. However, after watching the trailer for Obliterated, I was intrigued. The show looks like a wild and hilarious ride, and I'm excited to see what the creators have in store for us.
