“Devastating” Netflix survival thriller gets amazing Rotten Tomatoes score

Society of the Snow, released on Netflix on January 4, 2024, has become certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 91%.

The gripping Netflix survival thriller depicts the harrowing true story of the 1972 Uruguayan flight crash in the desolate Andes, where survivors are pushed to rely on each other for survival. Of the 45 passengers onboard, only 33 managed to live through the crash, among them were members of the Old Christians Club rugby union team.

Mireia Mullor of Digital Spy described "Society of the Snow" as a humanist experience that goes beyond the typical survival movie, striking a balance between realistic visuals, contained sentimentality, and existentialism.

Rodrigo Perez from The Playlist praised "Society Of Snow" as a cinematic marvel that evokes wonder, terror, and courage, while also capturing the powerful themes of togetherness, brotherhood, and survival, poignantly acknowledging the memory of painful loss and tragedy.

Brian Orndorf from Blu-Ray.com concurred, stating: "Bayona removes all sensationalism to delve into the genuine hardships and sadness of the survivors, striving to preserve as much humanity as possible in a story primarily renowned for its most horrific moments."

Nevertheless, not all Rotten Tomatoes reviews were impressed by Netflix's gripping new survival thriller.

Peter Martin's review on ScreenAnarchy suggests that Bayona's film "Leaves the viewer cold," but also acknowledges the technical impressiveness and respect towards the victims and survivors. Martin notes that while the heart may come later, Society of the Snow seems to be a resounding hit with the public.

"SOCIETY OF THE SNOW has the potential to rival ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT in terms of Oscar nominations. THE ZONE OF INTEREST and ANATOMY OF A FALL also deserve recognition. This film showcases incredible willpower, teamwork, faith, and a deep understanding of its subject matter. It is both heart-wrenching and captivating," commented a fan on X/Twitter.

Editor's P/S

As a Gen Z fan, I am thrilled to see Netflix releasing such a gripping survival thriller. The story of the 1972 Uruguayan flight crash is both devastating and inspiring, and I can't wait to see how it's portrayed in "Society of the Snow." The fact that it has received such high praise from critics on Rotten Tomatoes only increases my anticipation. I'm particularly drawn to the way the film seems to balance realistic visuals with emotional depth and existential themes. It sounds like a truly immersive and thought-provoking experience.

However, I also appreciate that not all reviews have been entirely positive. It's important for critics to provide a range of perspectives, and I'm curious to see how the film resonates with me personally. I'm also excited about the other upcoming shows and movies mentioned in the article, such as "Firefly Lane" Season 3 and "Ginny and Georgia" Season 3. Netflix has been consistently delivering high-quality content, and I'm confident that these upcoming releases will continue that trend. Overall, I'm feeling optimistic and excited about the future of entertainment on Netflix.
