Warning: The following article contains spoilers from Nancy Drew season 4, episode 13
Summary
In the series finale of Nancy Drew, Nancy and Ace ultimately choose to be together, recognizing their inability to be apart. To capture this significant moment, Director Amanda Row decided to maintain a still frame and mirror a prior conversation.
The scene captures the essence of relief and joy, rather than a dramatic first kiss, showcasing the delightful and fluttery sensation of being in love with someone.
The fate of Nancy Drew and Ace is revealed by the director of the series finale, as Nancy Drew makes its final appearance with its characteristic combination of eerie thrills and romantic turmoil. The ultimate episode, titled "The Light Between Lives", delivers both elements abundantly. Ultimately, Nancy (played by Kennedy McMann) and Ace (portrayed by Alex Saxon) end up together. However, the journey to reach that moment involves a few sacrifices, particularly for Tristan (played by Henry Zaga), who must let go of his spiritual connection with Nancy.
In her interview with TVLine, Amanda Row, the director of the series finale, discussed how Nancy and Ace came to the realization that they couldn't be separated. Row also touched on the significance of the moment and shared the instructions she gave to McMann and Saxon for the scene. Read Row's statement below:
"When Ace asks Nancy to join him in solving this last mystery, to me, it was like asking her to marry him. It was their way of acknowledging that there is no way they can live apart. They have to be together. And I adore that. I love how much Nancy and Ace have grown, even though it was never intended. It just naturally unfolded, which is what makes it so extraordinary."
The slow-motion shot of their earlier kiss this season was stunning. However, for this scene, I wanted to maintain a sense of stillness. I reproduced the framing used in the Season 4 premiere when they met at Icarus Hall. The exchange was identical, but the outcome was different this time.
This scene conveys a sense of relief and joy. It's not a dramatic first kiss moment, but rather a celebration of finally being able to enjoy each other. It captures the bubbly, butterfly feeling that comes with being in love. Filming this scene was an incredibly special experience for me.
