In the latest episode of Mushoku Tensei Season 2, we witness Rudeus embarking on a thrilling adventure in his quest to find his mother, Zenith. While he is gradually overcoming the pain of his difficult breakup with Eris, it is evident that he is still struggling to adapt to a life without her. Drawing strength from his cherished memories and unwavering trust in Roxy, Rudeus continues to venture forth alongside Counter Arrow, carving a reputation for himself in the northern territories.
This week's episode delves into Rudeus' emotional journey as he interacts with his fellow adventurers. Despite his outward display of strength, Rudeus remains deeply affected by the aftermath of his strained relationship with Eris. This marks just the initial phase of a lengthy process towards his healing.
Guild Conflict
Over several months, Rudeus has developed a reputation in the adventurer's guild, being affectionately known as Quagmire. In the hopes that this moniker will reach his missing mother's ears, Rudeus diligently takes on various tasks, even mundane ones like shoveling snow and clearing the town square. After finishing one such assignment, Rudeus receives an invitation from Sara to join Counter Arrow on a new mission. Initially hesitant, Rudeus eventually agrees to join the group.
The group sets off to the Galgau Ruins in search of snow drake scales. Initially, everything goes smoothly, but they soon find themselves under attack by snow drakes. Rudeus uses his magic to fight off the drakes and allows the others to escape, but he gets left behind. Luckily, the rest of the group returns to rescue him, only to find themselves cornered. Fortunately, another party called Stepped Leader arrives, turning the tables in their favor.
However, their troubles are far from over as their leader, Sol, accuses them of attempting to steal their job. Rudeus confesses to having overheard their plan, but clarifies that Counter Arrow's job was completely different and in a separate location. It becomes apparent that the two locations merged, causing the two parties to encounter one another. Eventually, they reconcile and part ways.
A Harsh Condemnation
After completing their job, Sara extends an invitation to Rudeus to celebrate their triumph with the rest of the party. They decide to go for drinks at a local pub, where their conversation eventually steers towards the topic of Sol. Just as they are about to criticize him, Sol himself barges in, visibly intoxicated, and once again apologizes for his previous outburst and false accusations of theft. However, instead of calming down, he unexpectedly shifts his anger towards Rudeus, accusing him of being excessively concerned with others' opinions. Despite Rudeus's attempts to diffuse the situation with a polite laugh, Sol only becomes more furious and has to be restrained by one of his comrades.
The following day, a sober Sol crosses paths with Rudeus again. Their relationship remains strained, with Sol adamantly refusing to apologize or retract his hurtful remarks. Unfortunately for Rudeus, he does not have the opportunity to address the issue, as Suzanne, Timothy, and Patrice return without Sara or Mimir. Concerned, Rudeus inquires about their whereabouts, only to receive devastating news: Mimir has tragically passed away, and Sara is currently missing amidst a severe blizzard. This catastrophic outcome occurred during their quest in Trier Forest, where they were attacked by aggressive snow buffaloes.
Purpose
Rudeus swiftly departs from the guild, gathering his belongings and setting off to rescue Sara. Sol's words replay in his mind as he effortlessly eliminates the snow buffalos and explores the forest, questioning the recklessness of his actions. He ponders whether his purpose lies not in saving Sara, but in achieving something that would give him a sense of worth. However, despite this contemplation, he remains uncertain of the significance behind his endeavors.
During his journey, Rudeus stumbles upon a mound of bones, identifying them as Mimir's remains. Alongside these, he discovers Sara's earring, sparking concerns about her potential demise. In an impromptu act of tribute, he cremates Mimir's remains, yet finds himself confronted by a peculiar creature that attacks him with ice magic. Determined to rescue Sara, Rudeus promptly locates the antagonist, a tree-like entity tightly grasping her. With great urgency, he rushes to her aid, successfully freeing her before being threatened by cascading ice.
Taking shelter in a nearby cave, the pair sought refuge from the rain-soaked garments. Once their attire had dried, they resolved to make their way back. However, before doing so, Sara expressed her gratitude to Rudeus for rescuing her, accompanied by a sincere and heartfelt smile. Though seemingly insignificant, this gesture managed to kindle a sense of warmth within Rudeus's wounded heart. As dawn approached, they returned to the town, where the remaining members of Counter Arrow were left astounded yet elated to witness Sara's survival.
