On her 44th birthday, Mindy Kaling revealed she’s healthier than ever because of her kids.

"I may come across as materialistic, but nothing brings me more joy on my birthday than these two amazing individuals," wrote the Mindy Project alum in a heartfelt Instagram post on Saturday, June 24. The post featured a photo of her 5-year-old daughter Katherine and 2-year-old son Spencer. Reflecting on her journey to motherhood, Kaling confessed that she had never been particularly fond of children until her mother's passing changed her perspective completely. This transformative experience ignited a deep desire within her to have children of her own, a feeling she believes many can understand. Despite not disclosing the identity of her children's father, Kaling emphasized that all of her efforts towards self-improvement, including diet and exercise, are driven by her commitment to being the best parent she can be.

"Now, I am striving to be fully present for my loved ones (which can be challenging for me, as I tend to be impatient!), open to new experiences (another struggle for me, as I am not naturally whimsical!), and maintain good health for the sake of these two important individuals (which can also be quite difficult! Sometimes, all I want is to indulge in cheesesteaks while lounging in front of the TV). I envision a future where my children, even as old as I may become, will kindly urge me to move forward and let go," Kaling shared in her caption. "Remarkably, my doctor informed me that this year, I have achieved my highest level of physical well-being in years. Now, isn't that a wonderful gift?"

She wrapped up her post with a final update: "Typically, I tend to experience a mild sense of anxiety, so on my birthday, I want to take a brief moment to appreciate the fact that I am genuinely happy right now. Life has its share of ups and downs, that is for certain!! However, at this point in time, it is the highs that hold the greatest significance. Thank you all for the birthday love and well-wishes. (By the way, maybe I will treat myself to that trendy Dior bag that looks like a kidney bean). ️."

In June 2022, Kaling told Byrdie that she attributes her good health to her children. According to her, working out helps her prevent conditions like diabetes and hypertension, which she is at a high risk for. She mentioned that her motivation to stay fit goes beyond just looking good as an actress. As a single mom, she emphasized the importance of living a long and healthy life.

After bravely fighting pancreatic cancer, Dr. Swati Chokalingam, the mother of Kaling, sadly passed away in January 2012. In tribute to her beloved mother, Kaling chose to name her daughter Katherine Swati.

In addition, the author of "Why Not Me?" expressed her delight in exercise, describing it as a blissful activity that serves as a substitute for therapy.

She concluded, “The point is that I feel so much better mentally if I’m in better cardiovascular health. I think a lot of it was helped by the fact that I had kids.”
