Legendary's MonsterVerse continues to expand in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, where audiences will be introduced to four new Titans joining Godzilla's reign over the monster roster. While previous MonsterVerse movies have hinted at the existence of numerous kaiju and daikaiju tracked by Monarch, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will delve deeper into this world, exploring different locations and time periods. Within these vast parameters, the show's characters are bound to encounter more than just Godzilla as they uncover the secrets of Monarch's past.
The latest trailer for the MonsterVerse show reveals glimpses of numerous Titans in various sizes and shapes, although their appearances are brief and offer little information about their identity. The director of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Matt Shakman, hinted that new Titans would be introduced in the show, making it a possibility that those glimpsed in the trailer are unseen in the franchise. Nonetheless, some of the Titans in the trailer bear similarities to already-named ones from Godzilla: King of the Monsters, potentially strengthening the MonsterVerse as it connects the show, the movies, and any future spinoffs or related projects.
Spider-Like Monster
John Goodman's character, Bill Randa, from Kong: Skull Island, can be seen fleeing from a gigantic, spider-like creature in the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters trailer. This creature is most likely a member of the "Mother Longlegs" superspecies, characterized by their female-only population, which previously attacked the exploration party in Kong: Skull Island. With its long, bamboo-like legs, the arachnid-like creature seamlessly camouflages itself within the forest. Additionally, the Mother Longlegs possesses two extra limbs near its head with clawed ends and muscular tendrils that descend from its body to ensnare prey.
Although commonly mentioned in Kong: Skull Island-related novelizations and other media, the trailer may introduce the Queen Mother Longlegs, a much larger variant of the standard creature with noticeable visual distinctions. The Queen Mother Longlegs was featured in the prequel comic book miniseries Skull Island: The Birth of Kong, establishing its existence within the MonsterVerse canon. While it is challenging to determine the exact size of the creature in the trailer, it is highly likely to belong to the Mother Longlegs species.
Winged Monster
In the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters trailer's final moments, a monstrous call reverberates as a winged creature bursts through a wreckage of a battleship oddly positioned in the heart of a thriving valley. In an earlier scene, another colossal being dominates the sky, and given the similar jungle environment they appear in, it is likely that they are one and the same entity. This creature possesses a sizeable mouth filled with teeth, crowned by two prominent horns atop its predominantly round head. Its wings resemble those of a bat, and if the two sightings truly showcase the identical creature, it also possesses robust legs equipped with formidable, clutching talons.
Remarkably, this description aligns with a kaiju previously featured in the MonsterVerse franchise. In the prequel graphic novel, Kingdom Kong, the colossal Titan known as Camazotz engages in a fierce battle with Kong himself. Camazotz displays bat-like characteristics, boasting demonic horns, jagged teeth, and a lengthy, spiked tail. Although Kong successfully vanquished Camazotz prior to the events depicted in Godzilla vs. Kong, as Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is set in an earlier time period, it remains within plausible bounds for Camazotz to potentially reappear without contradicting established canon.
Tentacle-Faced Monster
In the new Monarch: Legacy of Monsters trailer, there is a captivating inclusion of a creature with tentacles surrounding its face. Each tentacle emits a vibrant blue energy reminiscent of the powerful Hollow Earth energy that flows through Godzilla and empowers Kong's ax. The trailer showcases two shots of this creature: one reveals its menacing presence as it bursts through ice with a thunderous roar, while the other shows it in the background of a scene featuring Kurt Russell's character, Lee Shaw. In this shot, the creature is depicted as a four-legged being with immensely strong arms and claws.
It is plausible that this creature is one of the Titans mentioned on Monarch's global map of outposts in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but never made an appearance to acknowledge Godzilla's triumph over Ghidorah. Judging from its striking appearance, it is possible that this could be the MonsterVerse Titan Typhon. In Greek mythology, Typhon was depicted as a malevolent creature with multiple snake heads instead of a single one. The tentacles on the creature's face in the trailer bear a resemblance to snakes, thus drawing a connection to the mythical Typhon.
Beetle-Like Monsters
In the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters trailer, Lee Shaw (played by Wyatt Russell) and a colleague accidentally trigger a massive hatching of beetle-like creatures. These creatures emerge from their eggs and immediately begin pursuing the humans. Although they are initially only a few feet long, it is evident that they are in the larval stage of something much larger and more dangerous.
Later in the trailer, Shaw and his colleague are shown desperately trying to climb a rope to escape the swarming insects. The insects are depicted as swift and potentially deadly due to their swarming behavior.
This swarming behavior could potentially hint at the introduction of another Titan in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, there is a named yet unseen creature known as Abaddon. Abaddon is a MonsterVerse Titan confined to Outpost 77 in Wyoming. In biblical lore, Abaddon is a fallen angel who controls an army of locusts. The beetles seen in the trailer may represent the larval stage of the locusts that accompany the mysterious daikaiju, Abaddon.
