Meghan McCain fondly reminisces about her departure from ‘The View’ and reveals her longing for the talented wardrobe team that she left behind
Meghan McCain expressed her fondness for the wardrobe department at The View, stating that she still misses them even though she has left the show. In an interview with The Messenger, published on October 13, the 38-year-old shared her love for getting dressed up and praised the kindness of the wardrobe staff, who have been with the show since its inception.
McCain, who exited the talk show in 2021, has admitted that she does not watch it anymore since ending that chapter of her career. According to the host of the "Meghan McCain Has Entered the Chat" podcast, her busy lifestyle is partly to blame for this. Instead, she occupies her time by listening to numerous podcasts. In a light-hearted manner, McCain joked that watching The View is not beneficial for her well-being. Drawing a comparison to browsing through an ex-boyfriend's Instagram, she stated that it is simply not good for her. Therefore, she confidently affirms that she does not watch the show.
The journalist served as a cohost on the ABC series from 2017 to 2021. During her time on the show, she garnered attention for her outspoken views and clashes with various cohosts, including Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg. In her memoir, titled Bad Republican, released in April 2022, she explained the reasons behind her departure, stating that while she had many positive experiences on the show and considered it an honor to be part of such a renowned television program, she believed that certain incidents on The View should not be tolerated.
McCain argues that there exists a significant level of misogyny in the media's coverage and portrayal of The View. According to her, tabloids constantly perpetuate the notion that the co-hosts harbor animosity towards each other backstage. In her opinion, The View as a work environment brings out the worst in individuals, as they are forced to navigate a culture that is deeply flawed and feels suffocating like quicksand.
Meghan McCain expressed her feelings of being "extremely isolated" as the only Republican on 'The View' during Donald Trump's presidency. Additionally, her father's declining health negatively impacted her ability to comfortably work on the show. (John McCain, the former senator, passed away in August 2018 at the age of 81 after battling brain cancer.)
“I had been there for less than a month when the first article about me came out. It discussed how much of a disappointment I was and revealed my backstage nickname, ‘Elsa the ice princess’ [from Frozen],” Meghan recounted to Variety. “During this time, my father was battling glioblastoma. I sought permission from the network to take every other Friday off so that I could go back home to Arizona and assist him with his treatment. Despite feeling distant in this large show surrounded by strangers, I was determined to perform my best. It was disheartening to witness negative rumors being spread about me while others seemed unaffected, and there was certainly inappropriate behavior that could have been exposed.”
Earlier this year, Meghan affirmed that her time on The View belonged to the past. In an article for The Daily Mail published in April, she wrote, “There is absolutely nothing in this world that could persuade me to ever step foot on that set again.”
