Meghan Markle paid tribute to Princess Diana in Nigeria by wearing a diamond cross necklace that used to belong to her late mother-in-law. The stunning gesture was noticed on the Duchess of Sussex, 42, at a reception for military families in the Nigerian capital of Abuja on Saturday, May 11.
Meghan received a gold necklace with a diamond cross as a gift from Prince Harry, as reported by People magazine.
During their official three-day visit to Nigeria, Meghan wore the necklace while accompanying Harry to meet local charities and celebrate the 10th anniversary of Harry's Invictus Games.
The pair, who have a son named Archie, 5, and a daughter named Lilibet, 2, have followed in the footsteps of King Charles III and Princess Diana, who visited Nigeria officially in March 1990.
During the current tour, Meghan showed another tribute to Princess Diana besides the cross necklace. On Friday, May 10, she wore a gold collar necklace similar to one worn by Princess Diana in 1990.
Meghan often honours Princess Diana by wearing pieces of her jewelry that were given to her by Prince Harry. She has a collection of precious items including gold butterfly earrings, a gold bracelet, an aquamarine cocktail ring, and a diamond bracelet, which she has been seen wearing on different occasions.
When Harry proposed to Meghan in 2017, he included two diamonds from his late mother's jewelry collection in the engagement ring he gave to her.
Meghan, known for her great sense of style, has been taking care of her own hair and makeup during her travels in Nigeria. Her makeup artist Daniel Martin, who was involved in Meghan's wedding glam team in 2018, shared with us that she has not hired a stylist while in Nigeria.
"I feel like when I’m not with her, she has more room to play," Martin shared with Us during the Gold Gala on Saturday, May 11. "I think that’s the fun thing when you see her, like she’s in Nigeria right now. It’s just her. There’s no stylist, there’s no hairdresser. She’s doing everything herself and she’s so good at it."
The makeup pro, who has worked with Meghan for years before she met her husband, also mentioned that Harry prefers it when his wife wears minimal makeup to let her natural beauty shine through.
Meghan had nothing but good things to say about her partner at the Giants of Africa basketball exhibition in Lagos on Sunday, May 11. She told the guests not to challenge her to play basketball, as she admitted, “My husband is the sporty one!”
