Matty Healy Reflects on Moving on from a 'Special Love' Following Taylor Swift's Recent Album Release

The 1975's Matty Healy opens up about moving on from a 'special love' not long after parting ways with Taylor Swift

Fans are digging through old content to find hints about Matty Healy's connection with Taylor Swift after she released The Tortured Poets Department.

A video of Healy, 35, speaking to the crowd at The 1975's concert in St. Louis in October 2023 has reemerged following Swift's 11th album drop on Friday, April 19. One fan commented, "Watching this now is painful."

Healy introduces the band's 2016 hit "Somebody Else" in the footage. He expresses, "And you listen to them, but you’re like, ‘You don’t really get what our love was like. That was special love, that was a special thing.'" He then playfully adds, "Don’t be stupid. Get over it, c’mon."

While the beginning of Healy’s comments were cut off, one fan theorized via X that the gist of his message was, “Don’t text your ex after listening to this song.”

Four months after confirming his split from Taylor Swift, 34, Healy performed with The 1975 in Kansas City, the hometown of Swift's current boyfriend, Travis Kelce. The concert followed a show in St. Louis.

Healy and Swift were first linked in 2014, and they reconnected nearly a decade later after Swift's breakup with Joe Alwyn made headlines in spring 2023. Despite fans assuming that Swift's new songs would focus on her split with Alwyn, they were surprised to find that the album's 31 songs contained more lyrics about Healy.

Frequent listeners of both Taylor Swift and The 1975 have noticed some similarities in the lyrics of their songs. For example, Swift's song "Imgonnagetyouback" has a similar style to The 1975's "Fallingforyou" from their first album released in 2013. In Swift's song, she talks about the temptation to either destroy her ex's bike or invite them back to her house, which are also themes in The 1975's emotional ballad.

In "Imgonnagetyouback," Swift sings, "Say you got somebody, I’ll say, ‘I got someone too,'" echoing the sentiment in The 1975's "Somebody Else" where frontman Matty Healy expresses, "I don’t want your body, but I hate to think about you with somebody else."

Healy was given a heads-up before their bumpy history was explored on the album. A source exclusively told Us that he was worried their story would be portrayed negatively. Despite their breakup, Healy still feels really appreciative and thinks highly of Swift.

Swift and Healy no longer communicate, but they once had a strong bond. According to an insider, their relationship was quick but filled with passion and authenticity.
