Choosing Your Gaming Control: Keyboard or Controller?Gone are the days when PC and console gaming were seen as separate entities. The release of the first Diablo game for PC, PlayStation, and MacOS marked the beginning of a new era. As the franchise continued, the debate over which is better between keyboard and controller has become a recurring topic.
Diablo 4, the latest installment in the franchise, offers both controller and keyboard support, similar to its predecessors. With the growing trend of PC gamers using console-style controllers, owning a console is no longer a requirement to prefer a controller over a keyboard. However, the debate of which input method is better for optimizing the D4 experience remains a matter of personal preference and game design.
Interestingly, Diablo 4 was released without WASD support, the traditional keys used for character movement in isometric or 3D video games. While the reasons for this choice are not yet known, it may have been assumed that most players have a controller readily available. Nevertheless, the option for WASD support is on the way, leaving keyboard users with the mouse as their sole means of moving their characters for the time being.
Adjusting Your Preferences
Players have the convenience of automatic controller or keyboard detection, with essential buttons displayed on the screen for easy use. Swapping out keyboards or controllers is also a breeze for indecisive players. Key bindings for both controllers and keyboards can be easily changed in the Options menu, accessible by hitting ESC during gameplay.
Keyboard Versus Controller
While both keyboards and controllers have their advantages and disadvantages, they both fall short in some areas. One of these areas is the absence of an auto-run feature, which can be frustrating for gamers who want to navigate through their virtual worlds quickly. Another issue is buggy graphics, which can detract from the gaming experience and make it difficult to fully immerse oneself in the game.

Both Inputs
Pros. Keyboards offer more options for binding keys, even in small and compact designs, providing players with greater flexibility in choosing spells and actions without being limited by space. Additionally, keyboards provide easier access to social features such as chat and emotes, making typing and communication with other players more seamless.
Cons. However, the lack of WASD support can make it difficult for some players to adjust to keyboard controls. Without this support, players may have to rely heavily on using the mouse to move their character, which can be less intuitive and precise. Additionally, while many keyboards now offer Bluetooth support, their typical design may still be less portable than a controller.
Keyboard Only
Players can enjoy the benefits of the game's lightweight and durable design, which allows for more precise movement control using just their thumbs. The limited number of buttons also means that all essential abilities are within easy reach, making for a more streamlined gaming experience. However, players may have to make tough choices when it comes to sacrificing certain spells or skills in order to keep important abilities like Dodge readily accessible. Diablo 4 is currently available on various platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
