In Baldur's Gate 3, the structure closely mirrors that of its tabletop RPG counterpart, Dungeons & Dragons, where players have proficiency in specific skills. These skills are utilized in combat as well as in dialogue interactions with non-player characters (NPCs).
The choices made during character customization, such as selecting the class and background, have a direct influence on the character's proficiency in certain skills. Out of the eighteen available skills, each character can only excel in a small number. Considering this, here are the top skills that players should prioritize proficiency in, as they will greatly assist them in their future explorations.
8 History
In Baldur's Gate 3 (BG3), History can provide players with valuable insights and context as they navigate the game's world. Characters who are skilled in History, an Intelligence-based attribute, are more likely to remember and share information about past events.
Having proficiency in History can aid players in understanding certain encounters. For instance, in Act One, players may enter a dilapidated temple. With a background in History, they will discover that this temple was formerly devoted to a deity that is no longer revered in BG3.
7 Acrobatics
Many classes, especially those involved in ranged combat like Rangers, often have a high score in Dexterity. In terms of skills influenced by Dexterity, players should prioritize their proficiency in Acrobatics. Characters who are skilled in this area are more likely to maintain their balance and composure during agile moments. Moreover, Acrobatics proves to be incredibly valuable in combat situations.
One particular aspect of Baldur's Gate 3 involves being forcefully pushed during battles. If a player leaves themselves vulnerable to such an attack, the outcome could be fatal. Fortunately, those who excel in Acrobatics are less susceptible to being overwhelmed, as they remain steadfast and able to withstand such aggression.
6 Insight
Proficiencies are not only crucial in combat; they also play a significant role in non-combat scenarios like this Wisdom-based skill. When conversing with NPCs, players with a high Insight score can easily detect signs of deception or hidden agendas. The game's narrator will provide cues, such as nervous behavior or suspiciousness, to alert the player.
These moments of heightened insight can unlock previously unseen dialogue options, offering players a unique experience. Moreover, the Insight skill can prove invaluable outside of conversations. For instance, it can forewarn players about potential traps they might unknowingly stumble upon in certain situations.
5 Investigation
When exploring in BG3, players will often come across different mysteries that require investigation. Having proficiency in the Investigation skill is beneficial as it helps in searching for clues in such situations. While it is possible for players without this Intelligence-based skill to find a solution, their chances of success are significantly higher if they are proficient.
Although Investigation may not seem relevant in every situation, it can provide valuable context, similar to History. Discovering clues beforehand can make players feel more prepared for potential battles.
4 Athletics
Athletics is the sole skill associated with the Strength attribute. The attribute also has application in melee weapons. Nevertheless, this skill proves to be highly valuable in combat, serving a role similar to that of Acrobatics.
Proficiency in Athletics provides players with enhanced defense against being forcibly pushed. Additionally, the skill aids players in shoving their adversaries. Consequently, enemies experience the consequences of their own actions as they are thrown to their demise when they approach perilously close to the edge.
3 Persuasion
Charisma is a crucial trait in Baldur's Gate 3, almost on par with combat skills. Skillful use of words can help players steer clear of dangerous or unpleasant predicaments. Persuasion, among other skills tied to the Charisma attribute, will undoubtedly be the most frequently employed.
By harnessing their powers of persuasion, players can convince NPCs to turn a blind eye in specific situations or extract valuable information without having to part with a single gold coin. Oftentimes, resolving conflicts through conversation proves to be the simplest solution.
2 Stealth
While any player can crouch around and attempt to remain concealed, those with a high level of proficiency in Stealth have the ability to hide in plain sight. Stealth, which correlates with the Dexterity attribute, is considered to be one of the most valuable skills for a player to master, as it offers more than just criminal applications.
Players have the capability to surprise their adversaries by silently infiltrating the room they are in and gaining a strategic advantage. Similar to Persuasion, being adept in Stealth also enables players to completely avoid combat by silently circumventing dangerous enemies that could easily overpower both the player and their allies.
1 Perception
Regardless of the chosen class, every player in Baldur's Gate 3 should possess proficiency in perception, a Wisdom-based skill. It is undoubtedly one of the most crucial abilities as it enables the player to remain constantly aware of their surroundings. Perception proves invaluable in various situations, including identifying subtle environmental clues that may unveil hidden secrets or detecting instances in conversations where characters try to divert attention while attempting to pickpocket the player.
Baldur's Gate 3 is available now on PC. A PlayStation 5 version will be released September 6.
