Destiny 2 offers a diverse range of activities for players to enjoy, catering to various play styles. From intense PvP battles in The Crucible to challenging boss fights in Nightfall strikes, and even the thrill of acquiring rare gear, there is something for everyone. However, in an industry saturated with repetitive genres and gameplay mechanics, Destiny 2 decided to shake things up by introducing Gambit.
Before the Forsaken expansion of Destiny 2, the game only offered PvP and PvE content. While this is common in multiplayer games, Bungie took a bold step in 2018 by introducing a brand-new game mode. Gambit provides a unique experience by combining both PvP and PvE elements. Although the mode has gone through several changes since its release alongside Forsaken, the core principles and gameplay remain consistent.
The Rules
Two teams comprising of four Guardians each engage in a high-speed round of Gambit to determine the outcome of the entire game. The objective of Gambit is for one team to summon and defeat their Primeval, one of a few powerful bosses known as Taken, before the opposing team accomplishes the same.
To summon a Primeval, the teams must eliminate the enemies that appear throughout the arena and deposit the Dark Motes they drop by interacting with the central mechanism on the map. It is necessary to deposit a respectable amount of 75 Motes in order for players to have the opportunity to eliminate their Primeval. However, Gambit presents additional challenges, such as encounters with enemy players, which further intensify the gameplay.
Blocker Mote Costs
Players are limited to carrying a maximum of 15 Motes at any given time. While some Motes are dropped, the majority are lost upon death. Depositing these Motes not only brings a team closer to summoning their Primeval and achieving victory, but it also prompts The Drifter to summon annoying Taken adversaries, known as Blockers, to hinder the enemy team.
5 Motes summons a Taken Vex Goblin
10 Motes summons a Taken Cabal Centurian
When 15 Motes are gathered, a Taken Eliksni Captain is summoned. These hostile Taken enemies hinder the opposing team, preventing them from depositing motes. Players have the option to directly engage the enemy Guardians by depositing 25 Motes, activating their team's invasion portal. The invasion portal is activated again at 50 Motes or if the enemy team successfully summons their Primeval.
Teamwork and Coordination Win Gambit Matches
Upon reaching the required Mote deposit, the Primeval will be summoned, but players must first eliminate and conquer two Primeval Envoys before exposing the boss to damage. Following a rapid damage phase, this sequence will continue until a team successfully vanquishes their Primeval and emerges victorious in the match.
While the presence of a Freelance node does remove premade groups, achieving victory in Gambit ultimately hinges on the coordination and teamwork exhibited by players. Admittedly, certain weapons, mods, and loadouts can grant Guardians an advantage, but these elements are subject to seasonal changes and may not consistently serve as reliable guidance.
Make Multiple Blockers to Drain Enemy Motes
When faced with a 15-Mote Taken Eliksni Captain, the opposing team already has their hands full. However, the situation becomes even more challenging if this formidable enemy is accompanied by a barrier-generating Taken Vex Goblin or another equally cunning Captain. Not only does this combination of adversaries put additional strain on the opposing team, but it also poses a threat to the motes they have painstakingly collected and stored.
This situation arises when multiple Blockers are active, but it ceases when only one Blocker remains active. Therefore, Guardians should coordinate with their teammates to deposit their motes together, creating more pressure on the opposing team. Likewise, players should promptly eliminate any Blocker as soon as it appears, reducing the likelihood of having two or more active Blockers simultaneously.
Invader Kills Restore Primeval Health
Engaging in invasion strategies can prove advantageous prior to the summoning of Primevals in order to impede the advancement of the opposing team. However, it becomes exceedingly crucial when two teams are engaged in a race to defeat their respective Primevals. Whenever an Invader successfully eliminates an opposing Guardian, the Primeval of the enemy team experiences a significant restoration of its health.
Between the regained health and the bit of downtime between players reviving, a team of Guardians can claw themselves back from the brink of defeat.
Primeval Slayer Buff Grows Stronger
After eliminating the two Envoys, players will observe the acquisition of a beneficial effect named "Primeval Slayer" precisely when the boss becomes vulnerable to damage. Each subsequent acquisition of this effect will be accompanied by a modifier that enhances players' damage against the Primeval. Bearing this in mind, it is crucial for players to conserve their heavy ammunition during the initial damage phase, as they will have the opportunity to inflict significantly greater damage during subsequent phases.
Naturally, this deliberation should be balanced with the progress made by the opposing team, to prevent delaying until it becomes disadvantageous.
Destiny 2 is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
