Counter-Strike 2 underwent 6 months of beta testing before its release, resulting in the removal of achievements, which surprised players. Despite some disappointment, there is optimism that Counter-Strike 2 will tackle cheating problems with its advanced VAC Live anti-cheat system.
Counter-Strike 2 has officially replaced Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, resulting in the loss of any old achievements players had earned. This has caused frustration among fans who had dedicated time and effort to collect all 167 achievements, including some that were particularly challenging. The transition from CS:GO to Counter-Strike 2 occurred on September 27, following approximately 6 months of beta testing available only to invited players. Although information about Counter-Strike 2 was shared during the beta test period, the removal of CS:GO achievements has caught some players off guard.
All 167 achievements in CS:GO have been replaced by a single achievement in Counter-Strike 2 called "A New Beginning." TheDudeofDC, a Reddit user, initiated a discussion about this change, resulting in frustrated responses from achievement hunters in the comments. Others were more indifferent, stating that many people use third-party programs to unlock achievements anyway, rendering them without real-world value. Though this may be true, those who had dedicated time and effort to collect the achievements certainly hold them in high regard.
"Some of the GO achievements were faulty anyways, so good riddance," remarks Asdi144, referring to the fact that certain CS:GO achievements had become nearly unattainable through legitimate means. One such example is the "Aztec Map Veteran" achievement, which has essentially become impossible to obtain since Aztec was removed from the map pool in November 2017. Some commenters speculate that Valve might add new achievements in the future, but as of now, there are no known plans to do so. Despite this disappointing news, Counter-Strike 2 has displayed impressive player numbers, potentially on track to surpass CS:GO's all-time concurrent player record of over 1.8 million.
Including achievements that cannot be obtained in Counter-Strike 2 is illogical, but it is understandable that players who spent time obtaining them in CS:GO may feel upset. It is possible that Valve will find a way to acknowledge or reward those who diligently collected CS:GO achievements in the future. Although some players may be disappointed with Counter-Strike 2 removing their achievements, there is hope that the game will address some of its more prominent issues. The introduction of Counter-Strike's new VAC Live anti-cheat system aims to reduce the prevalence of cheaters, which was a frequent complaint in CS:GO. Counter-Strike 2 is now available for PC.
