Valve has recently revealed a slew of changes for Counter-Strike 2, including an overhaul of its core loadout mechanics and visual system, as well as alterations to the types of weapons available to players. With a release date slated for Summer 2023, there has been a dearth of news on the game since its initial announcement. However, based on the extensive revamps made to gameplay thus far, it seems likely that Counter-Strike 2 will be a game-changer. In fact, nearly every aspect of the game is being refreshed, including the removal of the old weapon selection wheel.
Counter-Strike 2 seems to be taking inspiration from Valorant's weapon selection mechanics by replacing the wheel with a custom grid. This grid will feature 5 pistols, 5 mid-tier weapons such as submachine guns and shotguns, and 5 rifles and carbines. Players will be able to customize all slots except for the starting pistols, but this does mean that some weapons will not be accessible mid-match.
The new 15-weapon limit also suggests potential novelties for the game. Valve has already added new weapons to CS:GO, such as the R8 revolver, and with the limited selection, they may add more guns over the course of the game's lifetime without overwhelming the selection wheel.
Valve has made some notable improvements to the weapon skins in Counter-Strike 2, including the addition of geometric differences between weapon models. While there may not be a drastic difference between each M4A1 skin, players can expect to see variations in suppressors, sights, grips, and other details, as shown in Valve's initial showcase videos. Additionally, Valve has implemented changes to their gambling policy for CS:GO, condemning certain activities that were previously considered acceptable for skin gambling. It remains to be seen if these changes will result in a healthier and more fair skin economy for Counter-Strike 2.
