As Martin Ødegaard walked his team onto the field at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night, the Arsenal captain felt the pressure of high expectations. The Gunners were trailing by a goal from the first-leg against Porto. They needed to overturn this deficit to advance to the quarterfinals of the Champions League, a feat they haven't achieved in 14 years. It's worth noting that Arsenal has never won this prestigious tournament before.
But amid all the spine-tingling, goosebump-inducing noise swirling around the ground, the Norwegian looked like the calmest man in the stadium.

As Ødegaard walked out of the tunnel before kick-off, the first thing he would have seen was a large sign on the opposing stand that said ‘Our House’ in Spanish. It’s fitting, perhaps, that this was the sight that greeted him.
It seems like Ødegaard has finally found his home at Arsenal.
Despite the pressure, the midfielder was laughing and joking with the children lining up in front of the players before kick-off, doing his best to reassure them amid the boisterous atmosphere created by the fans desperate to see their side progress in Europe’s premier competition.
His composure was a sign of things to come. On a magical night for Arsenal fans, Ødegaard produced another sensational performance, proving once again to be the creative spark for Mikel Arteta’s team.
In the final moments of the first half, a beautifully weighted pass from him broke through Porto's defense, allowing Leandro Trossard a chance to equalize the scores.
After that, it was Ødegaard who led the charge. His non-stop running motivated his teammates and his strategic passing kept Porto's defense on their toes.
Even as the hosts appeared to be getting tired, Ødegaard was there, leading the crowd and asking for more support for his team.
It was no surprise that the Arsenal captain was the first to take the nerve-wracking penalty shootout. He confidently scored his penalty, then celebrated by pumping his chest and proudly touching the badge on his shirt.

Since taking on the role of captain in 2022, the playmaker has embraced the responsibility of leading Arsenal. Teaming up with local talent Bukayo Saka, the Norwegian international is playing a key role in ushering in a fresh chapter for the club following the challenges of Arsene Wenger's exit.
Despite being just 25 years old, Ødegaard has been creating a legacy on the football field for more than ten years.
The talented midfielder caught the spotlight at just 15 years old when he became the youngest player to play for both his club Strømsgodset and the Norwegian national team.
His impressive displays on the field drew interest from top European clubs like Manchester United and Liverpool, who were keen on securing the services of this promising young player.
"At first, it seemed unbelievable and almost like a dream that so many clubs were interested in Martin," shared his father Hans Erik Ødegaard with CNN Sport in 2014. "But it's amazing how quickly you can adapt. Almost every top European club has reached out to us."
Real Madrid's challenges were evident.
Soccer fans may recall the buzz surrounding a talented young Norwegian teenager who was predicted to be the next big star. In 2015, he made headlines by signing a lucrative contract with Real Madrid.
His transfer to La Liga was seen as the initial stage of his path to success. At just 16 years old, he relocated to Madrid to train under the guidance of former French midfielder Zinedine Zidane, who was coaching Madrid's reserve team at that time.
Heralded as the future king of Los Blancos, Ødegaard became the club’s youngest player when he made his debut in 2016, but it wasn’t to be.

Stuck behind Real legends like Luka Modrić, Toni Kroos, and Casemiro, Ødegaard had limited opportunities in the first team.
In search of more playing time, the teenager went on loan to the Dutch league for two spells before joining Spanish side Real Sociedad for a season. Despite showing flashes of his talent, he faced challenges with consistency.
A loan move to Arsenal in 2021 was the next step for Ødegaard. It felt like the perfect fit this time. Manager Arteta, looking to usher in a new era at the north London club, signed Ødegaard on a permanent deal. This move finally gave the playmaker the stability he had been seeking.
In many ways it felt like Ødegaard’s last chance to make it at the top of the game, and he has taken taken it with both hands.
A place to shine
North London has now become the place where he has truly discovered his abilities, playing a key role in Arsenal's recent revival and delivering outstanding performances on the world stage.
"When he signed a contract extension in 2023, Arsenal manager Arteta spoke about Ødegaard's high potential from a young age," he said.
Martin has become the player he is today because of the experiences he has had in the past four or five years. These experiences have shaped him into the player and person he is now. We are thrilled that he has found a place to call home.
In addition to being Arteta's top choice, the Norwegian player has also gained a strong following among fans. Many Gooners proudly sport replica shirts with his name on the back.
The atmosphere at the club is incredible, according to Ødegaard. In his pre-match program article, which he writes before every home game, the Arsenal captain expressed that it is the best team spirit he has ever experienced in his life.
He believes that there is something unique and special about the team, and this is evident in their enjoyment of playing together on the field.

Many fans are still optimistic about Arsenal's chances this season. The team is set to compete in the quarterfinals of the Champions League and is also in a close race for the English Premier League title against Manchester City and Liverpool.
However, there are lingering doubts about whether this young Arsenal team has the experience and skill to emerge victorious in either competition. Most of the players have not won a major trophy before, and the manager is still relatively inexperienced at this level.
