Feeling introspective on his 50th birthday, Mario Lopez reflects on his journey and anticipates the future. One thing is certain - he has no intention of slowing down. Mario expresses his determination to continue working hard, especially as a former child actor who successfully transitioned into consistent work. Proudly, he mentions his role as a father to Gia, 13, Dominic, 10, and Santino, 4, who he shares with his wife, Courtney, with whom he has been married for 10 years.

"I never take it for granted," he affirms, expressing gratitude for his blessings and a determination to continue and expand his current endeavors.

In an exclusive interview for this week's cover story, the renowned host warmly welcomes Us into his Los Angeles home, delving deeper into his experiences of reaching the milestone of 50, his cherished family life, and his unwavering commitment to never retire.

How does it feel to reach the age of 50?

I feel great. It won't hinder my progress. It's one of those milestones that may sound old, but it's not. If you prioritize your health, there's no reason why you can't continue for another 50 years.

Are you in the place you envisioned yourself at this stage in life?

In youth, the thought of reaching 50 hardly crosses one's mind. It appears to be an eon away. However, now that I've arrived, I confidently declare that "50 is the new 30!"

I'm always flattered when someone compliments my youthful appearance, but truth be told, I don't do anything special. I attribute my luck and the preservation to drinking a lot of tequila, almost like it's embalming fluid. Additionally, staying happy plays a crucial role in maintaining a youthful appearance.

Can you tell me about the other foods you consume in your diet?

I don't keep track of calories and I thoroughly enjoy food, so I don't have any preferences. However, I make an effort to avoid excessive unhealthy food intake throughout the week. On the weekends, I indulge a bit more by consuming larger quantities, enjoying cocktails, and occasionally smoking cigars. Finding a balance is key in my approach.

What about exercise?

I enjoy engaging in daily training sessions, typically practicing jiu-jitsu or boxing. It invigorates me, making me feel vibrant and youthful, while also helping me stay mentally alert. It serves as a tremendous outlet for stress, and I often describe my training as a means of preserving my sanity rather than focusing solely on appearance.

Your skin is remarkably smooth!

I don’t have a special routine, but I use St. Ives Apricot Face Scrub. I like it because it’s grainy. It makes me feel like rocks are cleaning it. [Laughs.]

Have you become more confident as you've aged? Learning from our mistakes and continuously striving for personal growth contribute to this feeling. Reflecting on the past brings me joy, and I also feel optimistic about the future. Therefore, I have no regrets.

What achievement stands out to you the most when reflecting on your journey?

I take immense pride in my family. From my parents, who recently marked 51 years of togetherness, to my incredible sister and her family, as well as my amazing wife and children. Many things in life may be fleeting, but the presence of a supportive and loving family is truly invaluable.

The most fulfilling aspect of being a father is the moment you come home to the sound of "Daddy!" and witness your children welcoming you with open arms, displaying their unconditional love. It is in this precious instant that the true worth of fatherhood is realized.

What life lessons do you intend to pass on to your children? Hard work, determination, and integrity lead to success. With a supportive family, you have the strength to overcome any obstacle.

What are they currently involved in?

Gia, who recently celebrated her 13th birthday, exudes remarkable maturity beyond her years. I find it easy to converse with her as if she were an adult. She engages in singing, dancing, playing the piano, and actively participates in competitive cheerleading. Similarly, Dominic also dedicates his time to singing, dancing, and playing the piano, while simultaneously pursuing competitive wrestling and jiu-jitsu at an impressive level. As for Santino, he has recently embarked on his wrestling journey. Given his mischievous nature, I need to closely monitor his activities.

What do you guys like to do together as a family?

I like it when we’re all home, either watching a movie or hanging out in the pool or making a TikTok video.

Courtney organized a remarkable celebration for her spouse's 50th birthday at Casa Aramara in Punta Mita, Mexico, the same location where they exchanged vows. "It's going to be an incredibly unique experience," she reveals. Photographed by Britt & Shayne Benton, The Range Photography.

What keeps your relationship with Courtney so strong?

Courtney is incredibly cool and extremely supportive. She fully comprehends the flexibility of my schedule, and she excels as a mother. Additionally, we share a great deal of enjoyment and laughter together.

Are you currently engaging in date nights? We ensure that we dedicate time for mini retreats as it is easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life. It is essential to prioritize taking care of your relationship as well - you wouldn't want to offer only scraps to your significant other.

Have your children watched Saved by the Bell?

They gave it a try but didn't really enjoy it. I believe my mother introduced it to them, and their response was, "No, we're fine." They don't want to see any more of me; they already have enough! [Laughs.]

Can you believe it’s still such a fan favorite?

It blows me away. It was a little kid show. That’s what trips me out.

Do you still maintain a close relationship with your fellow cast members?

Yes, I frequently interact with them. Recently, I caught up with Tiffani [Theissen], and I occasionally engage in jiu-jitsu sessions with Mark-Paul [Gosselaar] and Elizabeth [Berkley]. It's a pleasant experience, reminiscent of reconnecting with old friends from high school.

What are your most cherished memories from the set?

Recalling events from just a few weeks ago is a challenge for me, let alone reminiscing about events that took place over thirty years ago. Fans bring up details from the show that have completely slipped my mind. We filmed it during the summertime when we were teenagers, and perhaps that's why it struck a chord with younger viewers, as adults frequently portrayed teenagers onscreen. It was an enjoyable experience.

It made you a ’90s heartthrob.

It’s wild. It didn’t suck when you were young and wanted to date, I’ll tell you that. [Laughs.]

Any secret romances we don’t know about?

A gentleman never kisses and tells.

What advice would you offer to your younger self? Despite the numerous distractions, it is impossible to foresee the future and make perfect decisions. The crucial aspect is to embrace your mistakes, learn from them, and strive towards personal growth.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of your work?

I have a deep passion for TV, music, and film. What I find truly exhilarating is having the opportunity to engage with exceptionally talented and captivating individuals from all around the globe. This experience never loses its charm. Remarkably, on my upcoming birthday next year, I will be honored with a star on the renowned Hollywood Walk of Fame. It's astounding to think that as a young Mexican child from Chula Vista, I was able to achieve such an extraordinary feat. Undoubtedly, it is a remarkable accomplishment.

What is your biggest achievement in your career so far?

As my father pointed out, I have never had to pursue a conventional job. We often hear about former child actors who struggle to transition into successful adult careers or find consistent work. However, at the age of 50, I never anticipated having my own radio show that reaches a national audience, hosting a daytime talk show and a nighttime show, and being a part of Access Daily and Access Hollywood. I take pride in the fact that I have been actively involved in this industry for an extensive period of time.

What has been the greatest struggle of being in the limelight?

I want to emphasize that my work does not define me entirely. I'm not constantly attending parties and premieres as part of the scene. The people I consider my friends are the ones I have known since childhood. When you are always in the public eye, people tend to construct stories about you, but after being in this industry for almost four decades, I understand that it is an inevitable aspect.

How do you deal with criticism?

I am not concerned about others' opinions unless it has a direct impact on my family, professional life, or well-being. I prioritize the well-being of my loved ones and those who financially support me.

What would you be doing if you were not in showbiz?

Growing up, my dream was to become an anchorman, as I believed they only worked for one hour a day and had the opportunity to inform their community. Currently, I am somehow involved in a similar field, but with a stronger focus on delivering news.

Are there any roles you regret not getting?

Yes, there are quite a few! During my younger days, I tried out for a role in Walker, Texas Ranger alongside Chuck Norris. I was supposed to be his co-star, but unfortunately, my height was an issue. Chuck Norris liked me, but he preferred someone shorter than himself. It was a disappointing miss for me since I admired Chuck Norris as a child.

Where do you envision yourself in the next decade? I aspire to become the Latin equivalent of Dick Clark, producing and crafting compelling narratives that shed light on individuals from my culture. My ambition is to grace your television screens for the next three decades. I am truly passionate about this industry and have no intention of decelerating. I aim to continue working until I reach the age of 100.
