This decision comes after the unfortunate death of Lance Reddick, the previous voice actor for Zavala. Commander Zavala plays a crucial role as the leader of the Vanguard in the game. Since 2014, Lance Reddick brought the character to life and earned a dedicated fan following due to his exceptional performance and distinctive voice. Upon learning of Reddick's passing, the Destiny 2 community gathered in the game to pay their respects to the beloved actor. Although there was initially no official confirmation regarding the recasting of Zavala's voice actor, Bungie has now chosen to entrust the role to a new artist.

Keith David brings a wealth of experience to voice acting in the gaming industry, having portrayed numerous iconic characters throughout his career. Notably, he lent his voice to David Anderson in all three Mass Effect games, voiced Spawn in Mortal Kombat 11, and portrayed Vice President Keith David in Saints Row 4. Interestingly, David has previously collaborated with Bungie as the voice actor for Arbiter Thel 'Vadam in Halo 2 and 3. Renowned for his deep voice, players consider David an ideal choice for Commander Zavala.
