The powerful network tied to billionaire Charles Koch has declared its support for former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley in the Republican presidential primary. This move may significantly alter the Republican field, coming just seven weeks before the Iowa caucuses, as Americans for Prosperity Action utilizes its considerable resources and a large group of conservative activists to rally behind the ex-governor.
The endorsement is the latest indication that influential Republican donors are uniting in support of the former US ambassador to the United Nations. In recent weeks, notable figures have joined her campaign, particularly after South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott withdrew from the race.
Earlier this year, AFP Action, a political branch of the Kochs network, vowed to support a single candidate in the GOP presidential primary for the first time ever. It also stated that it would skip over former President Donald Trump in its search for what Emily Seidel, a top AFP official, referred to as a president "who represents a new chapter."
"When we announced our decision to participate in our first Republican presidential primary, we emphasized the need for a candidate who can bring about significant change in our political system and ultimately win. It is evident that Nikki Haley is that candidate," stated Siedel on Tuesday. "We cannot continue to rely on the politicians of the past to solve the issues of today. Nikki Haley represents a new era of leadership and presents a compelling, optimistic vision for our future. AFP Action is honored to endorse her, and we are committed to supporting her in her bid to become the next President of the United States."
The former president is currently the clear front-runner in the Republican primary, as indicated by both national and early state polls, with Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis competing to establish themselves as the primary Trump alternative.
The network has already invested millions of dollars in advertising in early voting states this year to portray Trump as destined to lose the general election. One ad, "Unelectable," painted Trump as a repeat loser who would jeopardize Republicans in Congress.
The narrator warns that if Donald Trump becomes the GOP nominee, there could be major losses. Network officials have also revealed that their 2024 strategy includes reaching a wider range of voters to change the outcome of early GOP contests.
During his time in the White House, Trump frequently clashed with Koch officials, who heavily criticized his administration's trade and strict immigration policies. However, the network did support the Trump administration on other issues, such as the 2017 tax cut bill and a criminal justice reform. Additionally, the network endorsed his nominees to the US Supreme Court. This story has been revised with further reporting.
